    Djokovic 2-6 Nadal

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Djokovic has been really calm. The body language tonight, he's been taking it all in his stride. He looks composed, waiting for his time to come.

  2. First set Nadal!published at 20:55 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Djokovic 2-6 Nadal

Serve and a dipping forehand gets Rafa Nadal back to 15-15. A filthy forehand up the line gets Djokovic 15-30 up. Volley at the net from Rafa takes the sting out of a ball for 30-30. A backhand from the irrepressible Spaniard sets up set point and from his serve Djokovic finds the net.

A demolition first set. Filled with all kinds of lung-busting work from both. We are being treated. It feels like one-way traffic but we all know what's coming.

Bring on the rollercoaster I say. Who's with me?

Ay caramba! The Mexican wave has already started. The Nadal fans are livin' la vida loca.

Chair umpire Damian Dumusois appeals for calm.

Nothing excites a Chatrier crowd more than leaping to their feet and waving their arms in the air like they are an elephant's trunk.

Well, maybe Nadal winning a set tops that...

Nadal to serve for set one.

    Eyes down my friends.

Remember those schools of thought that Nadal wouldn't be the same player in the Paris night conditions?

He's looking like a vampire out there. Sucking all the life of Djokovic so far.

The colder conditions in 2020 - when Roland Garros was played in October - also didn't bother him too much.

He won the thing in temperatures more akin to Finland than France.

Plenty of life in the old Husky yet.

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

Nadal is on a mission and he's executing his tactics to perfection. It's an incredibly high level.

I expected this set to be more one-sided in Djokovic's favour, but it's been the total opposite.

I've not seen clay handled like this since Patrick Swayze got on the wheel in Ghost.

Nadal takes game six to love.

    Djokovic 1-4 Nadal*

    Laura Robson
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's hard to think that the level can be much better, so there's sure to be a dip at some point from Nadal. Djokovic has been taken to pieces here and he's not getting his weight through the shot.

He just needs to pick up his first-service percentage. It's looking a bit flat but there's a long way to go.

  11. 'Idemo'published at 20:41 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

Hang about, it is not all pro-Nadal in his home from home.

Four Serbs are behind one of the baselines, all decked out in their national colours of blue, red and white.

Sure they are the guys who were provided support to Djokovic in his last-16 win over Diego Schwartzman.

Djokovic clocked them over on the more intimate Lenglen and exchanged some intense stares with them to keep him firmly in the zone.

Every point their man wins the quarter jump to their feet and chant 'Idemo!' - the Serb equivalent of 'Vamos'.

  12. 'Total pressure'published at 20:40 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Djokovic 1-4 Nadal*

    Annabel Croft
Former British number one on BBC Radio 5 Live

It's total pressure on every department. Everything that Nadal is doing, he's just hitting the ball better, using the angles. He's been the better player.

  13. A stunning break...published at 20:40 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Djokovic 1-4 Nadal*

I think this is our high mark so far - a 25-shot rally. The quality of the play and the sound of the effort both men are exerting somehow join together like some kind of operatic delight. Djokovic pings a backhand over to end it.

He is in trouble though, 30-40 on his serve. He's got less than 50% of his first serves in so far - a problem.

Ohhhhh.... Sacre Bleu. Rafa Nadal with the kind of forehand that should be outlawed. Down the line. Game. Break. Pack the furniture up in this first set. The Spaniard is cruising it.

Someone once told me that while on training in the forces they were told to drink the juice out of a canned fruit salad. Apparently it was high in sugar and would get them through a few hours on the side of the mountain.

    So, where's the can opener?

We've been out here 29 minutes and Nadal has just taken game four. Anyone got any good survival tips from time in Cadets?

Djokovic had his break point in that game but couldn't take it and the Nadal forehand deep in the game was fizzing. A difference maker.

  16. Break points Djokovicpublished at 20:30 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Djokovic 1-2 Nadal*

Novak Djokovic leaps to get his body over a forehand and Nadal will not get that bad boy back. It's two break points. Number one is saved... Djoko goes long.

Number two is saved with a smash at the net. After blasting it home Nadal swivels into a fist pump. Sign that lad up for Dancing on Ice. He has flow. Deuce.

What did we say earlier, Nadal is 19-8 up on clay.

Point one of game four lasts 21 blows. There's a ball flicking the net, there's Nadal grunting, there's power on show time and again.

In the end Novak gets a bit wound up and goes for a cross-court winner with the backhand... wide. Magic stuff. On the next point Djokovic feeds a backhand up the line that has just enough ping on it to win the point. It's 15-15 on the Nadal serve...

  20. The sounds of Chatrier...published at 20:24 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport at Roland Garros

Wimbledon-style shushes are needed when one corner of Chatrier starts squealing with joy when a Djokovic return seems to be floating long.

It lands in, Nadal returns and the previously premature cheers can start when Djokovic goes into the net with the next ball.

More appeals for quiet come from this self-policing Paris crowd.
