    Zverev 6-4 6-4 0-0 Alcaraz*

If Carlos Alcaraz wins from the position, we're in for some finish to this match.

Alexander Zverev is in a great position after an impressive first two sets, and looks cool and calm as he prepares to face the Spaniard's serve.

  2. Shuker knocked out in first roundpublished at 17:19 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Griffioen 1-6 6-3 6-1 Shuker

Britain's Lucy Shuker's has been knocked out of the opening round of the women's wheelchair singles.

Shuker, a two-time Paralympic women's doubles bronze medallist, took the first set but fell to a 1-6 6-3 6-1 defeat by 2015 champion Jiske Griffioen of the Netherlands.

Shuker's return Roland Garros for the first time since 2016 isn't over yet, though, as she teams with American player Dana Mathewson in the quarter-finals of the women's doubles against Japan’s Momoko Ohtani and China’s Zhenzhen Zhu.

Alcaraz might not be playing his best tennis out there but you can't knock his energy level.

He knows the crowd are trying to get behind him.

    "Carlos! Carlos! Carlos!" chants Chatrier.

Clear who they want to win here. The volume is being dialled up.

One minor point: Alcaraz prefers to be called Carlitos or Charlie because he says Carlos is "too serious".

Not as good a chant though is it?

    *Zverev 6-4 5-4 Alcaraz

Sensational point. Alcaraz goes for the lob and then punishes Zverev with a drop shot with the German planted at the back of the court.

An unforced error cancels out the break point.

Zverev delivers on serve to set up another set point, but a terribly timed double fault keeps Alcaraz's hopes alive...

The Philippe Chatrier crowd aren't being subtle about who they want to win this game. Alcaraz reaches deuce.

    *Zverev 6-4 5-4 Alcaraz

Zverev hits back, following up a forehand winner by cutting through a backhand at the net for parity.

Wonderful point! Zverev hunts down a drop shot at the net and then smashes away an attempted lob to turn things around.

    Set point.

    Now then.

The crowd sense an opportunity for Alcaraz. They want a match here, and he may just be presented with the chance to deliver just that as he moves 0-30 ahead.

It just feels like everything Alcaraz is trying is not working. This is where it gets overwhelming for players in this situation.

The sort of errors Alcaraz has been making have been Ostapenko-level to be honest!

I think if you haven't yet been deep in the second week of a slam you don't know what to expect emotionally or physically.

And this was my question of Alcaraz.

    *Zverev 6-4 5-4 Alcaraz

Alcaraz hits 30 unforced errors for the match (compared to 12 from Zverev), as he falls behind on serve. A shake of the head. This wasn't what he had planned.

But a couple of backhand winners offer a classy response, and a fourth successive point wraps up the hold.

    Zverev 6-4 5-3 Alcaraz*

That sums it all up really.

An ace for Zverev, followed by two misses from Alcaraz, and a final winner to follow up a huge first serve - and all without response from his opponent.

Zverev is giving nothing away for free, while Alcaraz continues to stutter.

    *Zverev 6-4 4-3 Alcaraz

You have to say Zverev is well worth his lead here. A set and a break to the good against one of the form players this season and maintaining a really high level. Alcaraz needs to start finding answers fast.

Is that the first time in the match where Zverev has reached an Alcaraz drop shot? Think so. And it pays dividends for the big German.

Gasps and groans from the pro-Alcaraz crowd as the Spaniard plants that forehand into the net to hand over his service game.

Right now the Zverev serve is so good. It's dead straight and bounces up so high with so much pace.

    Superb return from Alexander Zverev!

Alcaraz nets and, at the second opportunity, Zverev gets the break.

  19. Break points Zverevpublished at 17:00 British Summer Time 31 May 2022

    Zverev 6-4 3-3 Alcaraz*

    Two break points!

Alcaraz goes for the drop shot at the net but Zverev has it covered, glancing a forehand down the line to set up a couple of opportunities.

    Zverev 6-4 3-3 Alcaraz*

Carlos Alcaraz certainly looks the more vulnerable on serve, and a couple of errors hand Zverev a 15-30 advantage.

Grumbles in the crowd. They haven't been able to get behind their favourite yet. It's a chance, this, for Zverev.
