US skier Bode Miller is talking up the dangers faced by the downhillers going for gold on Sunday morning.

"It's very treacherous," he says. "This course has teeth everywhere. The top is aggressive and speeds are so high and the turns are so swingy and bumpy that you can hook an edge anywhere. If you are not totally focused and paying attention, this course can kill you."

"Finnish goalie Noora Raty admitted her team had a "nightmare start" when they went a goal down to the United States within 60 seconds of today's Olympic ice hockey opener starting.

"Raty did her best to hold back the tide despite getting clobbered in the neck at one point during the game, and the 3-1 final score does not reflect too badly on Finland, given the clear supremacy of the US and Canada in women's hockey.

"They got a few lucky bounces, but they definitely earned their luck today - they were the better team," Raty told reporters afterwards. Her team-mate Mira Jalosuo called the second and third US goals "lucky bounces".

Who can challenge speed skating king Kramer then? His closest rival is likely to be his compatriot Jorrit Bergsma, a 28-year-old making his Olympic debut. He is the only man other Kramer to win a long distance World Cup race this season - he won the 5,000m contest in Berlin, an event Kramer skipped.
