2010 Olympic skeleton champion on BBC TV

"Lizzy is soaking it all up and is calm and confident. She is cracking on like it is any other race. 0.44 seconds is huge, it is massive. One big skid can lose that time, though. I texted her at the end of the race to check in. I told her to be calm, relax and chill out. She has to wait the whole day to compete. She has to do what she has always done."

The third run of the women's skeleton does not start until 15:40 GMT but that doesn't mean it is too early to start a countdown for what might be a British gold medal. After all, the Yarny Army are probably preparing for the final two runs as I type.

Race favourite Lizzy Yarnold, of course, is boisterously supported by the Yarny Army, a troop of family and friends carrying the union flag and wearing t-shirts with pictures of Lizzy on them.

Horatio McSherry:, external The Norwegians must be commended for their attire this Olympics. I'm thinking of taking up curling & becoming Norwegian myself.

Hazel:, external The Norwegian men's curling team should be given gold for their fabulous Olympic trouser range. Fact.

More on the ice hockey goal-that-was-but-wasn't-immediately-given row.

The BBC commentators are amazed that a Czech player, sin-binned during the minute or so between the goal being scored and subsequently awarded, still has to serve his two-minute penalty. They believe rules state that everything which happened during this strange and confusing time should have been erased from history.

Perhaps fortunately for the officials, Latvia did not take advantage of the power play.

Heck, being as we're talking about curling we should really mention the Norwegian men's attire again, mainly to use the word pantaloons once more. As a Valentine's gift, from us to you, we've screen grabbed a picture of the team in their floral pantaloons.

Britain's women came out on top in an edge-of-the-seat thriller against China on Thursday, securing the 8-7 round-robin win with the final stone.

It was the tonic Eve Muirhead needed after she had to defend the final-stone gamble which backfired and condemned Britain to a 9-6 defeat against Canada on Wednesday.

"I am just really glad we came back with a strong performance and I am really glad I managed to play a great shot to finish this game," said Muirhead after the victory over China.

In about an hour Eve Muirhead and her band of sisters will slide onto the ice for their round robin match with Japan. Britain's women have won two and lost two of their opening games and will favourites to see off a Japanese team which is ranked ninth in the world.

David Grice:, external Refs have lost it here. Not often you see the officials not have a clue in ice hockey compared to football.

Rick Carnall:, external We are all as confused as you about the officials of the Latvia-Czech game, I can see a massive protest coming.

  12. Ice hockey's ghost goalpublished at 08:59 Greenwich Mean Time 14 February 2014

There's been a bit of a brouhaha in the ice hockey. Latvia's Janis Sprukts, when his team were 1-0 down with seven minutes of the first period remaining, seemed to have banged the puck in the net only for the strike to initially be disallowed.

Somehow the officials missed it and play resumed for almost a minute until, eventually, they took another look. Remarkably, even Sprukts did not seem to realised he scored, despite standing only five feet away.

Justice ultimately prevailed, however, and the goal was given. Maybe instant goal-line technology should be used?

Enough about fashion, there's an ice hockey ding-dong happening between the Czech Republic and Latvia. If you have done your Winter Olympics homework then you will already know that ice hockey is the only full contact sport being contested in Sochi. The Czech's are 2-1 ahead after the first period.

The Norwegian men have committed far worse crimes against fashion this week, of course, and the floral kit they wore during today's 10-4 defeat by Canada made the team look elegant and dashing compared with what they've previously strutted on the ice. Their P G Wodehouse inspired pantaloons during Wednesday's match with Germany will stick in the memory.

The Norwegian curling team seem to have received sartorial tips from golfers John Daly and Ian Poulter. The men have already worn slacks which resemble their national flag, a toddler's doodle and a paintball accident this week. For good or bad, they have caught the eye. American Ted 'the shred' Ligety reckons he can still pull back a seemingly huge deficit of 1.93 seconds in the slalom section of the men's super combined this afternoon. The World Cup combined leader finished 18th in the downhill but says he is only worried about the slalom specialists in the field.

Croatia's Ivica Kostelic, the silver medallist in both the slalom and combined four years ago, was seventh in the downhill, leaving himself a deficit of 0.93s to make up, while France's Alexis Pinturault, who is second behind Ligety in the World Cup standings, finished 2.44 secs behind in 23rd place.

"I'm not worried about the downhill guys, I'd like to be closer to Kostelic but further ahead of Pinturault," said Ligety. "But I'm in a good position."
