    "You are in the gym doing strength sessions every day to get that power off the block.

    "Your head is also pushed into the ice by the G-force, so you have to have a very strong neck. You do similar things to rugby players in regards to strengthening the neck in training."

    Rudman is 0.26 seconds off the pace, behind joint-leaders Mellisa Hollingsworth and Katharine Eustace. She lies fourth and, whatever happens, is out of medal contention. She could finish as low as 16th.

    To set the scene, the half-cylinder tube of ice that is the track at the Sanki Sliding Centre is bathed in floodlight on this Sochi night. Not only does that give the occasion that extra tinge of drama, but the lights shimmer off the slickness of the ice. As competitors hurtle down, they are accompanied by the ringing bells of the crowd. I wonder if that, and the scraping of runners on ice, is the only thing they can hear?
