Wow. Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva's total score in the free programme is identical.

It's that world record for Zagitova in the short programme that has won her gold.

Evgenia Medvedeva scores 156.65 in the free - exactly the same as Alina Zagitova's tally. But the younger Russian held a slender lead after the short element of the event and that's enough to see her onto the top of the podium.

    WOAH!!!! What has happened here...

Stunned silence as it is revealed Evgenia Medvedeva falls little over a point below 15-year-old Alina Zagitova.

Fifteen! AN OLYMPIC GOLD MEDAL!! Remarkable.

Wow. Evgenia Medvedeva has nailed it. She breaks down in tears as soon as her routine comes to a close, the applause of the Gangneung Ice Arena thundering into the 18-year-old's ears.

Manchester City have got more chance of losing the Premier League title than she has ending up with silver. Surely?

That looks pretty good to me. Robin Cousins, who knows a thing or two more, says Evgenia Medvedeva is "absolute on the money"...

    Here's Evgenia Medvedeva.

The Russian has long been the favourite for Olympic gold in the women’s singles - until Alina Zagitova burst onto the scene.

Medvedeva is a two-time reigning world champion, and was unbeaten from November 2015 until last month’s European Championships, a spell in which she broke all the world scoring records on numerous occasions.

Now she faces an even bigger test. Here we go!

    Exquisite from Kaetlyn Osmond.

There was just that one tiny mistake falling out of the landing of the triple lutz, but goodness me.

Everything else was pristine, calm and assured.

Kaetlyn Osmond has a medal! The Canadian, who won silver at last year's world championships, looks a little surprised as she moves into second place.

    One contender left...

Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond drops to her haunches on the ice, breaking out into (relieved?) laughter as her routine comes to a close. There was one slight mistake early on as she wobbled on a landing, everything else as clean as a whistle in an assured performance.

It should be enough for a medal but we don't know what colour...

Alina Zagitova didn't have the perfect landing on that triple lutz.

She came back with exactly the same content as planned, but not necessarily in the order she would have planned.

Beat her score and the door is open to the gold medal.

Alina Zagitova racks up a score of 156.65. The bad news is that it isn't a new world record, nor is it a season's best. The good news is it's enough to stick the 15-year-old Russian into the gold medal position.

But there's more bad news: the final two - Canada's Kaetlyn Osmond and fellow Russian Evgenia Medvedeva - have a good chance of overtaking her.

Zagitova is aiming to become the second youngest women's figure skating champion in history and I reckon she's got a chance.

She had a slight wobble, missing a combination at the start, but thought quickly on her feet to recover.

A big punch into the air tells us she's happy. Over to the judges...

Remember what you were doing when you were 15? Chances are it wasn't competing in an Olympics. Russia's Alina Zagitova is.

Zagitova will dance to Dan Quixote, and will pack all her jumps into the second half of her programme for a points bonus. Right?

    Lovely stuff from Kaori Sakamoto.

Not quite of the quality of Satoko Miyahara but another fantastic senior debut.

Only seven skaters in the entire final are over the age of 20. She's likely not going to be heading for a podium but Kaetlyn Osmond is now keeping an eye out for two Japanese skaters for that bronze medal.

Carolina Kostner needed those triple-triple combinations but we didn't see any.

She was very tentative with a few of those landings. It didn't have some of the technical content of some of the other performances.

Lovely technique on the lutz though. She's certainly not going to challenge for first place.

Kostner, who won the world title in 2012, is also a six-time European champion and finally landed an Olympic medal when she won bronze in Sochi.

Don't think she's done enough here to go out with a bang in what is likely to be her last Olympics.

Nope, she's only moved into second, adrift of leader Satoko Miyahara.
