An historic moment for Italy - a gold medal must've been beyond all of their thoughts when they entered this competition.

Stefania Constantini has been absolutely brilliant. They're full of talent and ability and have been a perfect pair.

Canadian Trinity Ellis goes second, 0.457 seconds down on Ashley Farquharson.

Now then, world champion Julia Taubitz is up next... And that is the lead for the German!

American Farquharson is then bumped down to third as Latvia's Kendija Aparjode produces a fast run to mark the halfway point of this final run.

That's looking like a really good fourth run by Ashley Farquharson, who retains top spot as both Italian Nina Zoeggeler and Canadian Natalie Corless fall short.

And still the young American debutant leads, as Latvian Elina Ieva Vitola slots into fifth place. Memorable moments for the 22-year-old at the Yanqing National Sliding Centre!

It was a gold run worthy of Bob Holness from the Italian duo, who won all nine of their round-robin matches as well as the semi-final and final.

Only two other teams have done that in recent times.

Norway's Kristin Skaslien and Magnus Nedregotten won bronze in 2018, but they had their eyes on a bigger upgrade, all the way to the top step. The married couple are both wearing 1000-yard stares as their missed opportunity sinks in.

    Luge - women's singles

South Korean Aileen Christina Frisch manages to slide across the finish line beside her sledge after a crash coming into turn 14.

It's good enough to place just above Tove Kohala, but Canadian Makena Hodgson then leapfrogs Frisch in the early stages of this deciding round.

What can American Ashley Farquharson do? The 22-year-old Olympic debutant ensures she'll finish no lower than 17th as she moves to the top.

Interesting tactics from Italy, who fling one of their red stones off the end of the rink deliberately.

They want to leave the way clear to budge any Norwegian granite left in the house.

Norway's Magnus Nedregotten took a time-out to try and compute the advanced physics involved in the various plants required with his pair's penultimate stone.

A decent effort, Norway lying two. Italy play it defensive, guarding up against three rather than chasing their tail.

And Kristin Skaslien cannot improve on the two.

Italy have the hammer and, if they want it, a power play in the final end.
