Great save by Peslarovapublished at 10:24 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Japan 2-1 Czech Republic

Klara Peslarova makes a fine double save to keep the Czech Republic in the game.

There's an 'all or nothing' feel about this game right now. Anything could happen.

We talk a lot about the pressure that athletes are put under on the big stage but Kirsty Muir was just not fazed.

She knew the plan, she knew exactly what she was going to do, she put down her hardest trick and smashed it out of the park on her first jump. She got that under her belt and that gave her real freedom then to explore the rest of the tricks she's got in her arsenal.

It's such an inspiration to everyone at home - she's from Aberdeen where there's a couple of hills but it is just hard work and dedication that have got her here.

    Women's ski big air

Hopefully you've already been able to catch the women's freeski big air final.

We've just seen it again over on BBC One. A quite frankly ridiculous 1620 from Eileen Gu on her final run, under so much pressure at her home Games, to clinch gold in a competition of the highest quality.

If you haven't seen it - or just want to watch it again - here it is...

What a start to the third period!

We have two games and one period left of the preliminary round and we do not know a single match-up in the quarter-finals yet.

There's still so much at stake. It's fabulous. You couldn't ask for anything more.

    Speed skating - men's 1,500m

    Sonia Oxley
    BBC Sport in Beijing

Yesterday Ellia Smeding became the first speed skater to represent Great Britain at an Olympics for 30 years – beating her boyfriend Cornelius Kersten to it.

Kersten races today in the 1,500m and will still be able to claim to be the first British man to do it since Craig McNicoll in 1992.

"My aim is to just do the best race I’ve ever done," he told BBC Sport at the weekend.

"If I focus on my targets within technique and strength, because those are the things I can control, and I do that all the way through my race then I will be truly happy as that will be the best race I could."

Kersten and Smeding set up a coffee business together to fund their Olympic dream, as Katie Falkingham writes all about here. https://www.bbc.com/sport/winter-sports/55188293

    Japan 1-1 Czech Republic

That's it for the second period - and it's too close to call.

The Czech Republic started the period strongly and deservedly got their leveller through Denisa Krizova.

Japan have just about shaded things since, but it could go either way in the third and final period.

    Speed skating - men's 1500m

From 10:30 GMT, we'll have the men's 1500m speed skating.

GB's Cornelius Kersten is set to become the first male British speed skater to feature at the Olympics since Craig McNicoll in 1992.

He's in the fourth pairing, alongside the Netherlands' Marcel Bosker.

The man to watch is another Dutchman, Kjeld Nuis, the 2018 champion in both the 1500m and 1000m.

You get the sense if the Czech Republic are able to stick with this game plan, keep working in the corners, winning those battles, that they will continue to wear down Japan.

    Japan 1-1 Czech Republic

I'm note sure what a 'typical' ice hockey coach is supposed to look like, but I'm not sure Czech Republic Tomas Pacina is it.

He is looking very dapper in smart suit and pocket square as he calmly watches proceedings from the sidelines.

Anyway, back to the action and Japan spurn two opportunities to take the lead, with Haruka Toko fizzing an effort just wide before Akane Shiga's first-time shot is saved by Viktorie Svejdova.

It's GOLD for France's Quentin Fillon Maillet in the men's 20km biathlon!

Despite two shooting penalties, the 29-year-old finishes 14.8 seconds clear of Belarusian Anton Smolski.

The 2018 champion Johannes Thingnes Boe has to settle for bronze.

  12. Watch: Chen leads as Hanyu falterspublished at 09:48 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Figure skating

Nathan Chen delivered a world record-scoring routine to lead the men's figure skating at Beijing 2022 but Yuzuru Hanyu was left "shocked" when his medal chances were badly dented.

The showdown between the Japanese double Olympic champion and the American triple world champion is one of the most keenly anticipated here.

But Hanyu missed his opening jump in the short programme - saying he felt a "hole" in the ice - to sit eighth.

The decisive free skate is on Thursday.

    Men's 20km biathlon

World champion Sturla Holm Laegreid is off the pace as the Norwegian approaches the closing stages of the men's individual 20km biathon.

It remains Frenchman Quentin Fillon Maillet in gold, with a total time of 48 minutes 47.4 seconds, ahead of Belarusian Anton Smolski 14.8 seconds back in silver.

Johannes Thingnes Boe still sits in the medal positions, with ROC athlete Maxim Tsvetkov missing out on third by less than four seconds.

    Men's Individual 20km

    Rob Walker
    Commentator on BBC TV

The Belarusian Anton Smolski, not the man we were talking about before the race began, but he's going to be on the podium. It won't be gold but that is superb!

That is the difference between missing one and shooting clean - his accuracy has got him on the podium and I think he will stay there despite the quality athletes still out on the course - I think that will be enough,

Today marks three weeks to the day since Andrew Young tested positive for Covid, and he just told me he had a rough ride with it.

He’s pleased with how he felt during that event though, and can only get stronger going forwards.

  19. Fillon Maillet holding on to goldpublished at 09:35 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

    Men's 20km biathlon

Belarusian Anton Smolski is on course to push 2018 champion Johannes Thingnes Boe down into bronze position...

He gets there! With a perfect clean record on the shoots, Smolski is into silver for the time being.

But that lead time set by France's Quentin Fillon Maillet is going to take some beating.

A miss for German Benedikt Doll on his first attempt of the fourth shoot may have ended his gold medal hopes.

  20. Peng appears at Winter Olympics with Bachpublished at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 8 February 2022

Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai has been watching the Winter Olympics in a first public outing since her disappearance sparked global concern.

She had not been seen since a social media post in which she claimed to have been forced into having sexual relations with a former Chinese party leader.

Peng was alongside International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach as she watched her compatriot - US-born Chinese teenager Eileen Gu - win Olympic gold in the big air competition.
