I've been impressed with both teams, it's been a wonderful game to call, the intensity.

Sometimes over a course of a tournament you expect it to kind of ramp up and it certainly will but I think it's been even higher than I expected.

It's been physical for both sides.

Let's not worry too much about the medals just yet.

I'll draw the line if Spain, Mexico or any other hot-holiday destination make it on there before us though.

So a reminder we have the 10km cross-country ski coming up in the Nordic Combined at 11:00 GMT. It's made more exciting by the fact the athletes start with a time handicap because of their jump performance in the first stage.

So you get the good skiers chasing down the slower ones, etc. Think of those times you gave your gran a head start on Mario Kart...

Charlotte Bankes eliminated in snowboard cross quarter-finals

    Ed Leigh
    Snowboarding commentator on BBC TV

This is the very nature of snowboard cross racing. Charlotte has nerves of steel. You watch her this season, and she is so comfortable in close proximity racing. It’s phenomenal how well she does. It’s just centimetres between those boards. She is like a missile when she’s on track, but it’s unpredictable. Form is one thing, but the spontaneity of that racing means that there are no guarantees. Yes, it’ll take her time to process it, but she knows that’s the cut and thrust of snowboard cross. Come tomorrow morning, she’ll realise that.

  11. 'It was just a split-second decision'published at 10:16 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

Charlotte Bankes eliminated in snowboard cross quarter-finals

    Graham Bell
Five-time Olympic skier on BBC TV

It was just a split-second decision by Charlotte Bankes in her race. Do I go one way or the other? Charlotte’s trying to go on the inside. If she’s already thought about going on the outside, maybe pre-empted a mistake from Critchlow, then those two would have gone through, and Brockhoff wouldn’t have had the speed to come past.

But that is snowboard cross. At least in ski cross, there’s only one edge or the other. There’s no toe edge or heel edge. The fact that Charlotte is goofy [races left foot forward] has helped her a lot in some races, but the fact that Tess Critchlow is also goofy as well meant the two of them ran wide on that fifth bend.

  12. 'Bankes got overtaken on her heels'published at 10:15 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

Charlotte Bankes eliminated in snowboard cross quarter-finals

    Ed Leigh
    Snowboarding commentator on BBC TV

When Charlotte Bankes talked about it being a dense field, she’s talking about the talent there and how close they were racing. Usually in the quarter-finals, you’ve got differing levels of ability, and it’s actually a dangerous time, because you can get slower races, and slower racers catching you out. But they’re all travelling at a very similar speed here.

Because snowboarders are either regular or goofy, so right foot forward or left foot forward, you’re weaker on your heel side edge, so you see racers catching up when they’re driving off their toes and slowing down on their heels, and that’s actually what undoes Charlotte in the end.

She gets overtaken by Tess Critchlow while she’s on her heels, and then she’s generating speed on her toes, but Critchlow’s in front of her, makes a mistake, and she chooses the wrong line and loses all of her board speed, and then she’s lost touch with Belle Brockhoff.

  13. 'Go big or go home'published at 10:11 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Women's snowboard cross

Some more from Aimee Fuller on Charlotte Bankes' surprise exit: "You really are so exposed in boardercross, in other snowboarding disciplines it’s all about you but when it comes to this there’s so many different factors. You’ve got other people elbowing, it is quite literally neck and neck.

"So, it’s all about the people around you and how you manage that and you can’t control those factors. That’s why there is such a fine line between the win and the loss, it is a case of go big or go home and unfortunately today we saw Charlotte go home.

"Success at these Olympic Games really helps funds and the next generation. It’s people like Charlotte Bankes that really inspire the next generation and seeing her performance out there today even though it wasn’t the result we were all hoping for, it was a brave one and one that she should be proud of."

  15. 'It's so brutal'published at 10:09 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2022

    Women's snowboard cross

British slopestyle snowboarder Aimee Fuller reacts to Charlotte Bankes' shock exit in the women's snowboard cross: "A real, real blow because there was a lot of excitement also a lot of pressure on Charlotte going into this event, she was the one to watch.

"She is a master when it comes to dealing with pressure but looking at today’s race it just didn’t quite go her way and there are such fine lines in the sport of boardercross. You make one tiny mistake and you are out and unfortunately she was just pipped to the corner and once the leader was out in front there is absolutely no way she could get past.

"She had such a strong race and a performance she should really be proud of but it’s a really long course, very, very challenging but that’s the thing with sport, it’s so brutal."

    Women's snowboard cross

Lindsay Jacobellis finally has her hands on an Olympic gold medal after throwing away what looked like a certain win at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin.

She has been speaking to BBC Sport and said: "I’m just so excited it finally all came together. All the stars aligned and in this sport, that can be rare!

"I was always still hungry for it, always still loved racing. Every morning before a race it’s still nerve-wracking, still stressful and it’s a blast once you cross the finish line.

"I already felt I was a winner because I made it to finals because it’s so challenging now to make it.

"When we were held up in the gate for a while, my thought was I just have to ride. It’s going to be what it’s going to be. I really didn’t know how it was going to pan out."

Jacobellis's cousin is in Beijing working for an American broadcaster and she added:

"She told me this morning that she was making her way up. I was really excited she was able to be here, chanting and supporting me, definitely bringing that family energy from the US.”

This was Lindsay Jacobellis in 2006 when she crashed out of the women's snowboard cross final when she literally only had the line left to cross. It was the kind of moment that gets replayed time and again, reminding those watching that it's not over until it's over.

Here she was today. Down again, this time for all of the right reasons as she contemplated finally being Olympic champion, 16 years on from that horror moment.
