New Antrim hurling boss Kevin Ryan sees Saffrons beaten in opener

Kevin Ryan's first game as Antrim hurling boss ended in defeat as his former side Carlow beat the Saffrons 1-17 to 0-10 in the Walsh Cup.

Carlow led by 0-11 to 0-6 at the interval with Marty Kavanagh claiming four first-half points for the hosts.

Neil McManus tried hard to keep the Saffrons in touch from frees during the opening half but Carlow moved 1-15 to 0-6 ahead at Dr Cullen Park.

Paul Coady netted the only goal after he was set up by Kavanagh.

McManus cut the gap with a point entering the final quarter but scores were at a premium for Antrim in second half, which saw them held scoreless over a 12-minute spell.

Carlow now welcome beaten All-Ireland finalists Galway to Dr. Cullen Park next weekend while for Antrim a Walsh Shield tie awaits.

Armagh and Derry claimed wins in the Kehoe Cup while Down and Queens University Belfast suffered defeats.

David Carvill top-scored with 1-5 as Armagh recorded a 2-18 to 1-10 win over St Patrick's College, Drumcondra at Ballyboden.

Goals from Carvill and James King helped Armagh to a 2-12 to 1-5 interval lead, with Conor Joyce registering the students goal.

Derry claimed a 2-20 to 2-11 win over Trinity College Dublin at UCD with Paddy Henry and Diarmuid Shields scoring the Oak Leaf goals and Paddy Henry contributing nine points.

Elsewhere, Wicklow claimed a 1-15 to 0-15 win over Down at Bray with Andy O'Brien hitting 1-8 for the winners.

Down were reduced to 14 men with three minutes remaining following a second yellow card for Michael Ennis.

Meanwhile, Louth defeated Queen's University 1-13 to 2-8 win at Darver.
