The United States successfully defended their women's water polo gold medal after beating Italy 12-5 in the final.

Kiley Neushul, 23, scored three goals for USA, who had topped Group B with three wins out of three and beat Brazil and Hungary in the knockout stages.

Federica Radicchi got two goals for Italy but a 4-1 scoreline after the first quarter meant they were left playing catch-up throughout.

Earlier, Russia took bronze by beating Hungary 19-18.
