Mixed 4x400m relay - round one

    Harry Poole
    BBC Sport in Paris

Sam Reardon, Laviai Nielsen, Alex Haydock-Wilson and Nicole Yeargin will line up for Great Britain in the first round of the mixed 4x400m relay - an event GB won world silver in last year.

Nielsen was part of the team which made the podium in that final and there is serious strength in depth to call upon in the final, should they manage to get there.

Hosts France are joined by world champions USA in the first heat, with Great Britain and Ireland both in the second race and hoping to make those top three automatic qualifying places.

The stadium announcer tries to hush the crowd as chants of Allez les Bleus begin before the start, but eventually gives up and lets the athletes go anyway.

Fermin Lopez scored twice as Spain defeated to Japan in Lyon to move into the Olympic men's football semi-finals.

The Barcelona midfielder, 21, who was part of Spain's victorious Euro 2024 squad, opened the scoring early on with a left-foot drive into the right corner and added his second, with a dipping right-foot shot from 20 yards, after the break.

Mao Hosoya, who hit the post for Japan, thought he had equalised late in the first period but his effort was ruled out for offside after a lengthy VAR review.

Abel Ruiz's late tap in seal victory for the European side, who will now play Morocco in Marseille on Monday (17:00 BST).

Metal-hip Murray ‘proud’ of part deuxpublished at 18:05 British Summer Time 2 August

    Jonathan Jurejko
    BBC Sport in Paris

For many, today has been about reflecting on Andy Murray’s career.

It was split into two distinct eras: the Grand Slam-chasing decade of his swashbuckling youth and the inspiring comeback of the man with a metal hip.

In 2019, Murray was the first singles player to return to professional tennis after having hip resurfacing surgery - going to claim an ATP title later that year and earning some notable wins over big-name rivals.

Part deux has been challenging, no doubt, but he’s proud of his perseverance.

“Winning the trophy in Antwerp was great and although the results certainly weren’t consistent I did have wins against quite a lot of players who are up at top of the game - Alcaraz, Sinner, Tsitsipas, Hurkacz,” Murray told me.

“To do that with a metal hip, I don’t know if that will happen again or not.

“I was the first to try to do it and although it didn’t go perfectly I was able to have what many players would consider a pretty successful four or five years.

“It wasn’t the same as it was before but that’s what I’m most proud of - I was able to come back and play at the highest level with a pretty significant physical limitation.”

They all get the chance to perform a second routine now - you don't have to if you think you've done enough to qualify for the final.

Not to brag, but this reporter bossed her level 1 kayaking course – and let me tell you, those basic kayak control skills came in pretty handy when Newsbeat sent me to Lee Valley White Water Centre, where Team GB’s athletes train.

We’re here to talk kayak cross, a new sport for the Paris Games which British slalom canoeist Phoebe Spicer describes as like regular kayaking but "more aggressive and less technical".

"You’ve just got to go as fast as you can and hope it goes well."

Phoebe’s showing me round with fellow canoe slalom athlete Ben Haylett – they’ve both got an eye on the next Games in LA but for now they’re supporting the likes of Joe Clarke, who’s competing this afternoon with high hopes for a gold medal.

"It's really good to see more exposure for the sport," says Ben.

"It's just good to see people enjoying the water."

Earlier, Team GB's Joe Clarke finished fastest in the men's kayak cross time trial, becoming the top seed for the following rounds.

All 37 of the paddlers in the women's event have been down the white water course now and it's more positive news for GB!

Mallory Franklin was third fastest, while Kimberley Woods, the reigning world champion, came in 16th.

During the time trial, athletes make a run down the course on their own.

This determines the seeding for round one, and that's where the good stuff starts.

From tomorrow, up to four paddlers go against one another at the same time. Kayak to kayak contact is allowed and athletes can reach across another competitor with an arm or paddle. Brutal.

The crowd got right behind India's Ankita as she completed her final half lap solo at the end of the first women's 5,000m heat, which eventually came to life after a relaxed start. As expected, Faith Kipyegon and Sifan Hassan safely progressed.

All the biggest cheers are coming in response to the efforts of French decathlete Makenson Gletty, however.

The home favourite is continuing to delight the crowd during the decathlon high jump, with his latest clearance at 1.99m taking him up to seventh in the overall standings.

There are going to be scenes at the Stade de France if the European bronze medallist can get himself into medal contention.
