World Rowing 2013: Great Britain's men's eight reach final

Great Britain's men's eight team have qualified for the final at the World Championships in Chungju, South Korea.

They won their heat in five minutes 32.77 seconds, finishing nearly three seconds ahead of the United States.

"We did a really good job but it's not over yet - it's all about the final," said team member Dan Ritchie.

But there was disappointment for 2008 Paralympic gold medallist Tom Aggar, who narrowly failed to make the para-rowing men's single scull final.

Aggar came second in his race, 0.87 seconds behind Alexey Chuvashev of Russia, with only the winner of each heat advancing into the final. Aggar will now take part in the repechage on Tuesday.

Great Britain have sent a 58-strong squad to Korea, with men's head coach Jurgen Grobler looking for "a minimum of two medals".

The men's eight are regarded as one of Britain's strongest hopes for a medal and the team of Alex Gregory, George Nash, Tom Ransley, Pete Reed, Dan Ritchie, Will Satch, Mo Sbihi and Andy Triggs Hodge, along with cox Phelan Hill, remain in contention.

The final takes place on Sunday, 1 September and Britain will be competing against Poland, the United States and London 2012 Olympic gold medallists Germany.

Meanwhile, Matt Langridge and Bill Lucas moved into the men's double sculls final, while Frances Houghton and Victoria Meyer-Laker won their heat to reach the final of the women's event.

Sam Scrimgeour and Mark Aldred came second in their heat behind Italy and will now compete in the lightweight men's pair final, with the British lightweight men's four also reaching their final after finishing second behind the quartet from Denmark.

But the British women's eight missed out on a place in the final as they came third in their heat behind the United States and Australia.
