Javi Gracia's return as Watford boss ended with a 1-0 loss at Sheffield United and the Hornets head coach spoke to BBC Three Counties Radio:

"We expected a different game, a different result in our new beginning.

"We knew if would be a tough, demanding game - there was a moment at the beginning of the second half we had our best chance with (Caleb) Wiley, a moment which could have changed the game.

"It was an even game where the details mattered.

"There are many things to do and improve but after two weeks in the club working with them I am optimistic and positive."

  3. 'Fine margins'published at 18:11 BST 18 October

Preston North End boss Paul Heckingbottom told BBC Radio Lancashire:

"It was a tight one. I'm pleased with how we approached the game. We know how fine the margins are in this league.

"They scored two really good goals in terms of the finishing. But we could have defended better.

"We went toe-to-toe with a good team and I was pleased with the mentality. We looked like a good team."

West Brom are up to fourth in the Championship with their 2-1 win over Preston.

Boss Ryan Mason has told BBC Radio WM:

"I thought we played a good game against good oppositiion.

"We've not made the performances or our home stadium count yet this season but it's important the lads feel that today to win at home."

On the goals by Mikey Johnston and Isaac Price:

"Sometimes in tight games you need moments of brilliance to win you a game of football and luckily enough for us today we had two really special moments."

  5. 'We must play better with one player more'published at 18:05 BST 18 October

    FT: Birmingham 2-3 Hull

    Hull City

Hull City boss Sergej Jakirovic speaking to BBC Radio Humberside:

"It's easy to smile and laugh. During 97 minutes, it was not so easy.

"I'm so happy with the boys because they battle, they fight all 97 minutes. We didn't have control of the play with the ball, especially in the first-half.

"In the half-time, we tried to sort things out and I think it was better but we must play better with one player more. They need to run and of course, on the counter-attack, we can finish this game earlier.

"But okay, we are very happy to win some in a row for the first time in 100 years... I'm joking but this you see is an example of how this league is very difficult."

  6. 'It's completely unacceptable'published at 18:04 BST 18 October

    FT: Birmingham 2-3 Hull

    Birmingham City

Birmingham City boss Chris Davies speaking to BBC Sport WM:

"It's very disappointing to lose that match. What we wanted was more attacking impotence to create more chances and score more goals. We had a lot of that in the first half but conceded two really sloppy goals.

"My main idea at half-time was to continue, make sure we kept the back door shut but hopefully continue with our attacking play. But a real lack of discipline cost us.

"We keep pushing, there's no lack of that, they're fighting until the very end but unfortunately not enough. Self-inflicted today by a lack of discipline.

On Jack Robinson's red card after protesting against the referee:

"It's completely unacceptable. Certainly as a manager but not even as coach, I can't remember that ever happening.

"That lack of discipline is absolutely not what I expect from my players and my team. Completely unacceptable."

  7. 'We could compete - more or less'published at 17:58 BST 18 October

    FT: Charlton 2-1 Sheff Wed

    Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday manager Henrik Pedersen speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield:

“The boys delivered a fantastic second half. To be in this situation, 2-0 down, and deliver a second half like this, full respect to the boys.

“But we also have to learn that we need to be so brave from the beginning of the first half, because it was a very tight, equal first half with a lot of second ball and basic Championship things.

“We could compete with them, more or less, but the first goal was a little present, and the second a setpiece."

  8. 'We could have been a goal down'published at 17:54 BST 18 October

    FT: Stoke 1-0 Wrexham

    Stoke City

Stoke's 1-0 win over Wrexham moves them up to third place in the Championship with boss Mark Robins talking to BBC Radio Stoke after the game:

"It was hard fought, a good win but having said that we could have been a goal down but fortunately they missed it.

"But overall we've attacked pretty well, got a clean sheet and won 1-0 with a goal that typifies the game where we've hit the post or had a chance blocked.

"Some of the football we played was good but some of it we had wrong timing, wrong decision making but it's very simple and we are getting some things wrong but I'm nitpicking.

"We've come away with a positive result without making too many of those correct decisions - I'm delighted with the three points and large parts of that performance."

  9. 'One of the games that makes me happiest'published at 17:52 BST 18 October

    FT: Coventry 2-0 Blackburn

    Coventry

Coventry's win over Blackburn moves them back to the top of the Championship and Frank Lampard has been talking to BBC Radio Coventry:

"It's one of the games that makes me happiest. We've had it our own way a lot in different games with really good performances and control.

"But they (Blackburn) made it hard for us with their man-to-man pressing. There was not as much space and overloads we could create and we weren't as clean.

"But sometimes in games you rely on your players to do what they did. The two goals were fantastic and that's only through work and practise from the two boys (Torpy and Brandon) and themselves for practising those different finishes on the training pitch and that hard work pays off.

"It's nice for the group to understand that if we're not at our best, we can keep a clean sheet and still win a game like that."

  10. 'It was delightful to watch'published at 17:46 BST 18 October

    FT: Coventry 2-0 Blackburn

    Ben Mundy
BBC Final Score reporter at CBS Arena

It took the best part of an hour before Frank Lampard’s Coventry burned off the international break blues.

In fact, the first half against Blackburn Rovers was close. Very close. One of the Rovers’ staff joking with me over a half-time coffee that, “Coventry were holding on”.

It wasn’t quite that. But the hosts took a while to get going.

And yet, once Victor Torp and Brandon Thomas-Asante had fired them into a 2-0 lead, there was no letting up. No shutting up shop. No sitting back and soaking up.

It was delightful to watch – as Coventry continued to push and probe. And, a clear indication as to how the Sky Blues have managed to bag 14 goals in their last four games.

That tactic, on top of five consecutive clean sheets, means the rest of the Championship should have real Coventry concerns.

    • Stoke City have attained 18 points from their opening 10 Championship games this season (W5 D3 L2), just the second time they’ve had as many in a Football League season in their last 20 campaigns (also 18 in 2021-22).
    • Coventry City’s 2-0 win over Blackburn Rovers took their goal difference to +22 (29F, 7A) – after 10 games of a second-tier season it’s the best tally since Fulham in 2000-01 (+23).
    • Only Oliver McBurnie (6) has been involved in more Championship goals since the start of September than Charlton Athletic’s James Bree (5 – 2 goals, 3 assists) – it’s his most in a Football League season since 2021-22 (7).
    • Millwall’s Mihailo Ivanovic scored his first Championship goal of 2025-26 and his 11th in 2025, only Josh Sargent (16) and Haji Wright (13) have more. Indeed, no player has more headed goals in that time than his four.
    • Since the start of 2021-22, Birmingham City’s Jack Robinson has scored more own goals than any other player in England’s top four tiers (5). Indeed, he’s the first Championship player to score an own goal and be sent off in the same game since Ahmed Hegazy for West Bromwich Albion vs Millwall in April 2019.

Norwich boss Liam Manning has overseen five successive home defeats in the Championship and he's been talking to BBC Radio Norfolk:

"I felt a bit more let down today than anything - I spoke to the lads there and said they need to look in-house - it's just too nice around the place.

"There wasn't enough aggression or purpose when you're losing a game to change it and the manner of the goal is so soft.

"I can't play the game for them, we can give them game plans and solutions but the second the whistle goes you need people to step up.

On the standard of the squad:

"The squad needs a lot of work, I won't hide from that and we haven't shown enough quality. Have we got the composition right? I don't know.

"I wouldn't be stood here now if I wasn't up for the job.

"I've had to fight to get here and my default is to get my head down and keep fighting, keep pushing until I'm told different."

Bristol City remain unbeaten away from home in the Championship and are up to sixth place with their win at Norwich.

Boss Gerhard Struber has been talking to BBC Radio Bristol:

"The effort and how much the boys invested was on a very high level.

"Every single player was so focused and concentrated in his own task and how we went as a team was brilliant.

"The boys left everything on the field - the belief was we would score a goal and the determination was at an outstanding level and I felt it was only a matter of time (before we scored.

"We now have to bring our away power to our home games."

  17. 'It wasn't the game plan to just get a point'published at 17:32 BST 18 October

    FT: Southampton 0-0 Swansea

    Swansea City

Swansea head coach Alan Sheehan told BBC Sport Wales:

"They made it tough for us at times. We were a small bit off it in the last 20 minutes of the first half. Second half was a small bit more even. We changed shape during the game which gave us more of a foothold.

"But in terms of resilience, defending the box – I think you have to do that in some games, and that's the most we've had to do that this year.

"It wasn't the game-plan to just come here and get a point. We wanted to win it, but our attacking play could have been better.

"The quality in certain areas needs to be better of course. But it's a display that shows character against a team who have an enormous amount of quality."

  18. 'One of our best performances of the season'published at 17:30 BST 18 October

    FT: Southampton 0-0 Swansea

    Southampton

Southampton manager Will Still told BBC Sport:

"I couldn't be happier with the way the team's played. I think that's probably one of our best performances of the season.

"We have totally controlled, dominated, and created so many chances. I am really proud of what the team has shown today.

"We performed to a level that we want to perform at. I know that sounds stupid because we are missing a goal, but you can't do much more than what we have done.

"I think the fans understand where this is going. Those who really understand football know how good that first half was but also the second half. We have hit the post twice and I don't think Al [McCarthy] has had a save to make.

"We have an XG over three and with an XG of over three, we should be scoring four or five goals."

  19. 'Not aggressive enough'published at 17:28 BST 18 October

    FT: Oxford 1-0 Derby

    Derby County

Ebou Adams of Derby CountyImage source, PA Media

Derby County boss John Eustace blamed lack of aggression for his side's defeat on the road which leaves them a point abopve the bottom three.

"The goal comes from us not being defensively strong enough on the turnover," Eustace told BBC Radio Derby.

"From there we kind of lost our way, we huffed and puffed and were second best. We just lacked that leadership, that knowhow and it was too easy for them to play through us.

"Today it wasn't about tactics, it was just about losing too many duels and not being aggressive enough."

  20. 'We were excellent'published at 17:25 BST 18 October

Oxford boss Gary Rowett hailed an "excellent performance" from his side as they beat Derby County in one of the earlier kick-offs.

The U's had 19 shots during the game and would have had a far easier afternoon but for the efforts of Rams keeper Jakob Widell Zetterstrom.

"It was a perfect game apart from not coming in at half-time three or four nil up," Rowett told BBC Radio Oxford.

"We've won a game finally that we actually deserved to win, which is what we've done a lot of times and ended up losing those games. I thought it was an excellent performance."
