Kurt Gidley: Warrington Wolves sign Newcastle Knights captain

Warrington have signed utility player Kurt Gidley from Newcastle Knights for next season on a one-year deal.

The 32-year-old has spent his whole 15-year career at Newcastle, making over 230 appearances in the NRL, and has 12 caps for Australia,

Gidley, who has played at full-back, half-back, centre and hooker, has also played 12 times for New South Wales in the State of Origin series.

"I've had Super League in the back of my mind for a few years now," he said.

"It was probably after Andrew Johns played at Warrington and he gave it a glowing report for his short stint," Gidley told BBC Radio Merseyside.

His older brother Matthew, 37, has spent time in England with a four-year stint at St Helens between 2007-10.

"He will bring some of the big-game experience," said Wolves head coach Tony Smith.

"We are delighted to be bringing some more experience in, particularly into our backline to help guide us around."
