  4. Colour change at McLaren

    Formula 1

    Andrew Benson

    BBC Sport chief F1 writer

"McLaren have announced that they are to change their car's colour scheme from this weekend's Spanish Grand Prix. The team, struggling for competitiveness in the first season of their new engine partnership with Honda, are to drop the chrome that has been a mainstay of the car since 1997.

"There are no pictures as yet, but a spokesman described the new design as 'a dynamic, predatory, graphite-grey colouration, complemented by McLaren day-glo 'speedmarks' and key lines'.

"He added that this would 'optimise (the car) not only for bright sunshine but also for the floodlights used in twilight and night races'.

"Given McLaren chairman Ron Dennis's famous fondness for any colour as long as it is grey, the decision will doubtless lead to plenty of jokes when F1 convenes at the Circuit De Catalunya on Thursday."

  5. Alonso might not win again

    Formula 1

Double world champion Fernando Alonso might not win another race in his career, says former team-mate Jarno Trulli.

The 18-year-old fly-half will join the Pro12 club after playing in this summer's World Rugby Under-20 Championship in Italy.

  119. LATEST GOSSIP

    Football

    Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Neto

Liverpool have reaffirmed their interest in Fiorentina goalkeeper Norberto Neto after the Brazilian had second thoughts on a move to Juventus, according to the Daily Express.

The 25-year-old would challenge Simon Mignolet for a first-team spot as Liverpool's current deputy Brad Jones is now set to be released when his own contract expires at the end of the season.

  120. 'Pietersen can forget return if Strauss is appointed'

    Cricket

Former England batsman Geoffrey Boycott says Kevin Pietersen does not stand a "cat in hell's chance" of returning to the England team if Andrew Strauss is appointed as the new director of English cricket.

    getty

"If that is the best that Tom Harrison, the chief executive, can come up with, God help us," writes Boycott in the Daily Telegraph. "Why? Because Alastair Cook calls him "Straussy", they opened the innings together for a long time, are best mates, shared dressing rooms.

"So Cook will be safe and captain for ever, as will some other players Strauss played alongside. He is too close to so many of the current players to take an objective view.

"And if his comments on air about Kevin Pietersen last year are anything to go by, there is not a cat in hell's chance of him returning."

  121. 'Mentally tough game'

    Cricket

Former England bowler Derek Pringle: Trott's retirement shows what a mentally tough game Test cricket is and how difficult it is to remove doubt once it is taken hold.

England batsman Jonathan Trott has retired from international cricket. The 34-year-old returned to the Test side for the tour of the West Indies, 18 months after leaving the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness, but managed only 72 runs in six innings.

  122. Carver offered to go

    Football

Then again, according to reports elsewhere - especially in the Daily Mail - it seems John Carver offered to resign during a day of fraught meetings at St James Park yesterday.

Apparently Carver told owner Mike Ashley he would stand aside if the club could find a replacement, and Newcastle approached Derby manager Steve McClaren to ask him to take over with immediate effect.

McClaren turned down the offer, say the Mail, at which point Newcastle gave Carver their public backing and announced he would continue as manager.

The long and short of it? These are not happy times in the north-east.

  123. Carry on Carver

    Football

I don't think I've ever seen a photograph where John Carver doesn't look annoyed.

    getty

    See.

Mind you, if you were manager of a side that had lost 12 of the last 17 games then you'd be pretty cheesed off too.

But Carver has had some good news, told that he will keep his job at Newcastle for the final three games as the club fights to avoid relegation.

It's going to be a close-run thing. The Magpies - who host West Brom on Saturday - are 15th in the table, just two points above the relegation zone.

    #bankholidaybest

Many of you will just be returning to work after a bank holiday weekend rammed to the gunnels with sport.

But what was your sporting highlight?

Was it Bingham in the snooker, Arsenal's win, or maybe Murray's lederhosen? Or maybe it was Bury's promotion, Colchester's survival, or your Sunday team's last-minute victory...

Whatever, let us know now at #bbcsportsday, text 81111 (UK users only) or post on BBC Sport Facebook.

  125. Pacquiao to have surgery

    Boxing

For those doubting whether Manny Pacquiao - who lost the so-called fight of the century (yeah right) to Floyd Mayweather - really did have a shoulder injury... the news is that he did.

    Manny

According to American broadcasters ESPN, Pacquiao is to undergo surgery on his right shoulder later this week to repair a "significant tear" in his rotator cuff.

'His rotator what?' we hear you cry. Well, obviously didn't hastily Google it but it's quite a vital part of the shoulder and, if you damage it, surgery is required.

Medics say Pacquiao will be out of action between nine months and a year - assuming the surgery and rehabilitation go well.

Bad news for Manny - but possibly good news for Amir Khan, who is hoping for a shot at Mayweather later in the year.

  126. Saving the day

    Football

Here's a big statement from Phil Neville.

Arsenal could challenge for the Premier League title if they sign a "world-class" goalkeeper, he reckons.

    getty

"I look at David de Gea and he has won five or six games for Manchester United with important saves," said Neville.

"If Arsenal get a keeper in, they can be a championship-winning team."

Several other sporting stars celebrate birthdays today too, including...

James Cracknell (rowing) Double Olympic gold medallist in the coxless four, 43.

Yossi Benayoun (football) Israel international and former Liverpool and Chelsea midfielder, 35.

James Whitaker (cricket) Former Leicestershire captain and current England national selector, 53.

Juan Pablo Sorin (football) Former Argentina captain, 39.

  129. Many happy returns

Blowing the candles out on his cake today will be Duke McKenzie.

It's an oft forgotten fact that McKenzie, who celebrates his 52nd birthday, was the first British boxer to win a world title at three different weights.

    getty

McKenzie won the IBF flyweight title on 5 October, 1988 with an 11th round knockout over Rolando Bohol, and added the WBO bantamweight title with a 12-round decision over Gaby Canizales three years later.

He collected a third world title in 1992 when he beat Jesse Benavides after 12 rounds for the WBO Super Bantamweight title.

    Happy birthday champ.

OK, that's a terrible headline but it's our way of saying, get a load of these shorts.

In beating Philipp Kohlschreiber in the Munich Open final on Sunday, Andy Murray became the first Briton to win an ATP-ranked event on clay since Buster Mottram in Palma in April 1976.

But, better still, as part of his prize, he was presented with a pair of lederhosen - and then, good sport that he is, put them on. Here's what happened next...

  135. I regret missing Premier League - Buffon

    Football

So then, there's a rather big Champions League game coming up tonight - Juventus hosting Real Madrid in the first leg of their semi-final.

    Gianluigi Buffon and Arturo Vidal

Marid are the favourites but Juve have had a hell of a season, securing a fourth consecutive Serie A title at the weekend and facing Lazio in the Coppa Italia final as they chase a treble.

It has been extraordinary, says captain Gianluigi Buffon, in this very good article - in which the 37-year-old also talks about his regret at never playing in the Premier League.

  137. Back in time - part two

And some other sporting anniversaries from this day...

1954: Warrington and Halifax played in front of rugby league's biggest ever crowd when 102,569 attended their Challenge Cup final replay at Odsal.

1973: Sunderland beat Leeds to win the FA Cup against all odds, Ian Porterfield scoring the only goal of the game and goalkeeper Jimmy Montgomery producing a stunning second-half save.

2009: Man United defeated Arsenal 3-1, completing a 4-1 aggregate win, to earn Sir Alex Ferguson's side a place in the Champions League final ... though they were beaten 2-0 by Barcelona.

2014: Mark Selby completed a come-from-behind victory to beat Ronnie O'Sullivan 18-14 in the World Snooker Championship final at the Crucible, the first time five-time champion O'Sullivan had lost in the final.

  138. Back in time

What have these got in common ... Trotsky was exiled from the Soviet Union, Charles Lindbergh was presented with the Medal of Honour for the first non-stop flight across the Atlantic, and British inventor John Logie Baird demonstrated the world's first colour television transmission?

Answer, they all happened in 1928.

As did, on this very day, this.

    Dean

Legendary Everton striker Dixie Dean - pictured in white - broke the record for the most goals in a season, beating George Camsell's 59.

Dean needed a hat-trick on the final day of the season to better Camsell's mark - and, in a sure sign of greatness, duly struck a treble in the Toffees' 3-3 draw with Arsenal at Goodison Park. Legend.

  139. Game over

    Cricket

So, farewell to Jonathan Trott, a man who, for a few years, was one of the best batsman England have had.

The 34-year-old returned to the Test side for the tour of the West Indies, 18 months after leaving the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness, but managed only 72 runs in six innings.

    Jonathan Trott

As a result he's announced his immediate retirement from international cricket, saying, with admirable honesty: "This is a tough decision but I don't feel my game is at the level needed to play for England."

The Warwickshire player - who will continue to play county cricket, scored 3,835 runs in 52 Tests - including a century on his debut in the 2009 Ashes decider.

  141. Gunning for glory

    Football

Arsenal moved level on points with second-placed Manchester City and heightened Hull's relegation worries with a superb display at KC Stadium.

The Gunners were sensational in the first half when Alexis Sanchez, twice, and Aaron Ramsey put the Gunners 3-0 ahead.

A Stephen Quinn's header after the break gave Hull hope but they never truly looked like getting back in it.

"One thing we wanted to do in the second half was to make sure it was not one of those ridiculously horrible evenings," said Tigers boss Steve Bruce, whose expression below kind of sums up the night.

    Bruce

Defeat saw Hull slip to fourth-bottom, one point above the relegation zone. They play Burnley on Saturday - talk about a big game.

  142. Warrington pounce

    Rugby League

Bit of breaking news. Warrington have signed former Australian international Kurt Gidley, his NRL club has announced

The 32-year-old Newcastle Knights captain, who won 12 caps for the Kangaroos from 2007-13, will join the Wolves on a 12-month deal at the end of the year, with an option of a second season with the Super League club.

  143. Say cheese

    Snooker

Here's one for the family album (though should that lad really be allowed on the table ... oh go on then, given the occasion we'll let him off this time).

    Bingham

"To beat Shaun in the final tops everything off," said a delighted Bingham. "Twenty years as professional - blood, sweat and tears on the road. Qualifying in places like Prestatyn and Malvern.

"So many family and friends have backed me. It is unbelievable."

    Well done that man.

  144. Who's got no bottle now?

    Snooker

Stuart Bingham - who seems an awfully likeable chap - will awake this morning (possibly with a sore head and needing to pop an Alka-Seltzer or two) in the knowledge that he has become the oldest first-time snooker world champion since 1978.

Back then, Ray Reardon won the title aged 45. Bingham, 38, held off Shaun Murphy to win 18-15 in a terrific final at the Crucible.

    Bingham

And afterwards he claimed a remark from fellow player Mark Allen, who claimed Bingham had no bottle, spurred him on to success.

"Since then things have changed," said Bingham, who is £300,000 richer today.

Full report of the final here.

  145. Good day for...
