Challenge Cup sixth round: St Helens 46-6 York

Tommy Makinson took the chance to add to this seasons Super League haul of 10 tries

St Helens winger Tommy Makinson enjoyed a 22-point haul as the 12-times winners powered past League 1 side York to reach the Challenge Cup quarter-finals.

Makinson ran in four of Saints' nine tries, as well as kicking three of the home side's five goals.

He was almost matched by fellow wing Adam Swift, who followed up his own four-try haul against Catalan Dragons last weekend with another hat-trick.

Centre Mark Percival and forward Mark Flanagan got Saints' other two tries.

Just when it looked as if they might be nilled, part-timers York, the lowest-ranked side left in the competition, got a consolation try on their first visit to Langtree Park.

With just three minutes left, winger Tyler Craig earned the biggest cheer of the night when he went over in the corner, full-back Ben Dent booting the touchline conversion.

Super League champions St Helens were already without scrum-half Luke Walsh following ankle surgery. But they progressed comfortably, despite choosing to rest a number of players, giving debuts off the bench to academy products Olly Davies and Morgan Knowles.

Young hooker Dougie Charnock kicked Saints' other two goals as they booked a place in the last eight on the final weekend in June.

St Helens coach Keiron Cunningham:

"It was an impressive job done. Defensively we were outstanding. We could have gone out with a poor mental attitude but we are getting back to where we were at earlier in the season. But York expressed themselves well, threw the ball about and deserved their try.

"We had a few players in different positions so our attack was never going to be that great but we still managed to score some very good tries. Tommy Makinson had a bit of a grumpy face when I took him off because I think he wanted another try.

"The two kids Olly Davies and Morgan Knowles were sensational. Morgan didn't look out of his depth in the middle. He had plenty of energy and line speed and Dougie Charnock is turning into a great number nine. He showed he can kick goals as well."

York coach James Ford:

"We showed a lot of character against such a big club and I was pleased with most of it. We did pretty well in patches and stuck to our system.

"We didn't execute quite as well as St Helens. Swift and Makinson are very good players. But we made six line breaks and that's pleasing.

"We started a bit sloppily and t took us a bit of time to get going. But Keiron Cunningham is a legend in Rugby League and I believe he will have plenty of respect for us."
