Gene Ormsby scored a hat-trick for Warrington

Gene Ormsby scored a hat-trick as Warrington extended Salford's losing run at the AJ Bell Stadium.

Ben Currie charged down Theo Fages' kick for the visitors' first try, but Salford replied through Corey Paterson.

Tries from Ormsby and Stefan Ratchford extended Wolves' lead before Junior Sa'u reduced the deficit.

Ormsby added a second after the break before Niall Evalds replied for Salford, but Brad Dwyer and Ormsby's third try secured Warrington's win.

Salford have now lost six straight games and remain 11th in the Super League table.

Warrington pressed from the outset and Salford's defence held firm for the first 10 minutes, but Ireland international Currie hunted down Fages' kick for his eighth Super League try of the season.

Salford then forced a goal-line drop-out when Chris Hill allowed Paterson's restart to bounce, and the Warrington defence could not stop the Australian from the resulting set of six, as he charged over from 15 metres before slotting the conversion.

Wolves began to dominate and Ormsby finished well in the corner following an offload from Chris Bridge, before Daryl Clark's short pass found Ratchford whose weaving run extended their lead.

Salford got one back before half-time when Weller Hauraki passed early to Sa'u, who powered his way over the line before Paterson's successful conversion.

The home side began the second half on the front foot, but Orsmby went over for his second try following a good run from Currie and Ratchford added the extras.

Evalds' stretch for the line and Paterson's conversion briefly got Salford back to within four points, but Brad Dwyer marked his return to Warrington with a powerful drive over the whitewash.

Ormsby then secured his hat-trick with an acrobatic finish and kept his side in the hunt for a top-four place.

Salford coach Iestyn Harris:

"That was frustrating and they had a lot more good ball than us. Every time we got to their end we seemed to have a penalty against us.

"Theo Fages is getting better and better and will be a lot more dangerous when he has a natural half-back partner back.

"We are really competing but not getting what we want out of the games."

Warrington boss Tony Smith:

"(Ormsby's) try was a spectacular effort and he did exceptionally well, but all our wingers get to practice that sort of stuff.

"The bloke who fed him a few times was on fire. Ben was awesome and has been a standout player all season.

"He should be playing for England at some stage in the future.

"We had to really dig in because Salford had a real crack at us. They've had two weeks to get ready for this and we took time to wear them down."
