Castleford's Denny Solomona scored the third of Magic Weekend's four hat-tricks

Denny Solomona scored four tries as Castleford thrashed bottom side Wakefield to close Magic Weekend.

Solomona touched down twice in quick succession, adding two more in the second half, as Tom Johnstone (2) and Daniel Smith scored for Wakefield.

Ashley Gibson scored a second-half hat-trick as Jordan Tansey, Michael Shenton and Luke Gale also crossed for Tigers.

Wakefield named Brian Smith as their new head coach before the game, but the side have not won since February.

Although the Wildcats showed some courage, Australian Smith - the elder brother of Warrington boss Tony - has a monumental task of turning around their fortunes, having now suffered 13 straight Super League defeats.

The final game of Magic Weekend - watched by an event record 67,788 supporters over two days - was a one-sided West Yorkshire derby as Castleford triumphed over their rivals to move up to sixth place.

Kiwi Solomona dived in twice in the same corner within the first six minutes, and full-back Tansey was on hand to easily touch down another try for Daryl Powell's Castleford side.

Wakefield gave their fans some cheer as Johnstone powered through the opposition back line - and touched down another - with Smith picking up a loose ball to get on the scoresheet.

But Shenton dummied his way in before Solomona scored his third following shambolic Wakefield defending and Gibson twice touched down.

Former London Broncos man Solomona punished further Wakefield ineptitude when two players clashed while going for the ball. Gale ran clear for his try and Gibson completed his treble to round off an emphatic victory.

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell:

"I am really pleased with the final result. We started the game outstandingly well and our second half was excellent.

"Denny Solomona has got a fair bit of ability and did really well. He had a bit of spark about him. Both our wingers finished well today.

"It is pretty tight in the table. It is about being consistent and a lot of teams have stockpiled together in the competition. If we achieve our targets we will be in and around the position we are currently in."

Wakefield caretaker coach Stuart Dickens:

"Our second half today was not acceptable for the Super League. We weren't good enough today and there's only the players that can get us out of this."
