Super League: Hull KR 36-10 Warrington Wolves

Albert Kelly's creativity with ball in hand and with the boot guided Rovers around the pitch with skill

Scrum-half Albert Kelly inspired Hull KR to an impressive win over Warrington that bolsters their top-eight hopes.

Rovers are now level on points with Hull FC who are in the final top-eight spot and also have a game in hand.

Despite falling behind to Chris Hill's try, Rovers went in four times without reply through Ken Sio, Josh Mantellato, Kieran Dixon and Liam Salter.

Gene Ormsby scored for Warrington but ex-Wolf Tyrone McCarthy and Kris Welham sealed the win.

Defeat leaves Warrington in sixth, two points above the two Hull clubs.

Kieran Dixon lit up the game with his broken field running and well-taken try.

In the absence of Terry Campese, out for the season with a knee injury, Australian playmaker Kelly pushed the home side around the park with smart play, notably with the boot, while try-scorer Dixon's pace was a threat.

Having gone in front - thanks to Hill's fine footwork on an error-strewn night in rapidly deteriorating conditions - the Wolves fell apart as Hull KR found rhythm.

Sio was given the space on the right from a swift Kelly shift to race away and beat Ratchford in the corner, and after Welham collided with Joel Monaghan, Matellato touched down the loose ball.

After the break, Dixon carved his way through the brittle Wolves line, stepping Ratchford on the way across the stripe, and Salter claimed Sio's tap-back from Kelly's bomb as Rovers racked up the points.

Ormsby's score after a flowing move was too little, too late for Tony Smith's side as McCarthy strode over from Kelly's kick to touch down against his former club and Welham crossed to put the game out of sight.

Hull KR head coach Chris Chester:

"It proves we're not a one-man team. 'Bobbie' Blair is a very good half-back and kicks the ball well. He played a lot with Albert Kelly at the Gold Coast and they really shone tonight but the pack got us on the front foot.

"We spoke before the game about having to defend our line very hard and I thought physically we were very good. We fronted up against a very good Warrington side. We got in their faces and that put us on the front foot.

"We are kind of peaking at the right time. Winning becomes a habit and you could see tonight there is a lot of confidence in the players. They are starting to believe, there are a lot of smiles on faces."

Warrington head coach Tony Smith:

"There are no excuses, we weren't firing on all cylinders. I thought we were okay in the first half. Our defensive efforts were good but our attack lacked some punch, apart from the lovely play by our front-rowers for the try.

"I don't think we asked enough questions of our opponents in the first half and that hurt us. It was a poor 10 minutes at the start of the second half and it put us on the back foot against a spirited side who are full of confidence at the moment.

"Our contact wasn't great so we need to work on that and, once we do, we will come out the other side."
