Justin Carney scored four tries as Castleford beat local rivals Wakefield and kept up their Super League top-four bid.

After Huddersfield took advantage with victory in Perpignan on Saturday, pressure was on Castleford to keep pace and they responded.

Carney scored four of the Tigers' 10 tries with Luke Dorn crossing twice.

Wakefield only trailed 18-12 at half-time but were blown away after the break by Daryl Powell's side.

Castleford and Huddersfield are level on points going into the final round, and want a top-four place to ensure an extra home game after the split.

Reece Lyne's early try on the back of Tim Smith's grubber gave Wakefield an unlikely lead, but quick-fire scores from the dancing Grant Millington and then a poacher's effort from Luke Gale put them in front.

Anthony Walker powered through Cas cover to draw level, but Mike McMeeken twisted over on the hooter to give the Tigers a half-time lead.

If the first half was tight the second was a largely one-sided affair, with seven tries to two in the visitors' favour.

The left flank proved most profitable for Cas with Oliver Holmes and Dorn scoring, while all of Australian winger Carney's scores came down that channel.

Tom Johnstone showed his acrobatic qualities with two finishes out wide for Trinity, but they proved little consolation after a heavy defeat.

Wakefield head coach Brian Smith:

"Kevin Locke's gone to hospital and we're not too hopeful it will be anything but season-ending for him unfortunately.

"We had some good moments but not as many in the other games.

"We let ourselves down pretty badly early in the game and it got worse."

Castleford head coach Daryl Powell:

"When we had the ball in good field position we looked threatening and some of our finishing was sublime.

"It's great for Justin Carney to get some tries - it's been a bit of a lean time for him while the bloke at the other end has been getting a shed-full.

"We're not going to be able to catch Huddersfield, which is disappointing, but we're still in a great spot."
