Wigan Warriors: Shaun Wane 'not over' 2014 Grand Final loss

Wigan Warriors head coach Shaun Wane wants to win the Grand Final this season to erase the memory of their loss to rivals St Helens last year.

Wales prop Ben Flower was sent off in that match for punching Lance Hohaia as 12-man Wigan lost 14-6 to Saints.

Wane's side overcame Huddersfield 32-8 in their play-off semi-final to book their place at Old Trafford against either Leeds or St Helens.

"I've never got over it," the 51-year-old told BBC Radio Manchester.

"It was moral victory in the manner we played with 12 men but we still lost and St Helens' name is on the trophy and that is what they talk about a lot.

"There is only one way to come out of Old Trafford and that's a winner."

Wigan chairman Ian Lenagan hopes to face Challenge Cup and League Leader's Shield holders Leeds at Old Trafford, to avoid any focus on the events of last year.

"I would like it to be Leeds, but I have a sneaking feeling that St Helens will beat them," he said.

"That's then the ultimate between the two top teams and we haven't played Leeds in a Grand Final since 1998 when Jason Robinson scored that try.

"I don't want any parallels made with last year with Ben Flower and all that sort of stuff so in that respect I'd prefer it to be Leeds, but I still have a sneaking feeling St Helens might get there."
