Scotland are out of the World Cup after a 14-14 draw with Samoa.
The draw means Steve McCormack's side finish bottom of Group B on points difference after heavy defeats at the hands of Tonga and New Zealand.
The Scots led 14-6 at half-time after tries from Lewis Tierney and Frankie Mariano, but Samoa went over twice in the second-half to deny them the victory they needed.
Samoa will play Australia in the quarter-finals.
Head coach Steve McCormack was looking for a response from his Scotland side following those heavy defeats and having seen three of his players - including skipper Danny Brough - sent home for being too drunk to board a flight.
And the match in Cairns started brightly for the Bravehearts as Tierney touched down in five minutes, after Samoa's Young Tonumaipea made a mess of Danny Addy's chip into the in-goal area.
Samoa were level soon after when Junior Paulo powered his way over from close range but Addy edged the Scots ahead again with his second goal from a 40-metre penalty.
The Bravehearts' confidence grew as the first half progressed and with Samoa struggling to get going, they went further ahead when Mariano got his hands on an attempted offload by Timoteo Lafai and went over untouched.
The Pacific Islanders rarely looked like breaking the Scots down and when they did just before the interval, former Wakefield hooker Pita Godinet blew a certain try with a wild forward pass to Ricky Leutele.
Samoa were a different team after the restart and Matthew Wright hammered the point home when he held off Matty Russell's tackle to touch down spectacularly in the corner, although he was unable to add the extras
Scotland were digging deep defensively and Matty Russell got a foot to a kick in behind to deny Wright another try, but Samoa crossed in the next set through Tonumaipea after Jarome Luai spotted a hole on the short side.
It remained 14-14 after Wright was wide with his conversion and Addy spurned a golden opportunity from another 40-metre penalty.
Addy then missed an attempted drop goal and Samoa saw out the final minute to end Scotland's World Cup.
