Early Super League leaders St Helens made short work of Salford as they ran in six tries to make it four wins out of four.

Postponed because of Friday's snow at the Totally Wicked Stadium, the rescheduled game was only given the go-ahead four hours before kick-off.

Saints led 8-2 at the break with tries from Tommy Makinson and Ben Barba.

But Barba ran in another, before Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook, Jonny Lomax and Luke Thompson all crossed too.

Australian full-back Barba was involved in each of Saints' first three tries.

After his perfectly weighted kick to Makinson for Saints' first try, Barba went over himself when Alex Walmsley sucked in four Salford tacklers before slipping the ball to skipper James Roby who fired out the try-scoring pass.

Danny Richardson missed both conversions, the only successful kick of the half coming from Gareth O'Brien's penalty - but that proved the Red Devils' only points.

Barba stepped his way to the line straight after the break, to which Richardson this time applied the extras, adding a penalty when Salford were penalised in front of the sticks.

And, although the hosts failed to capitalise when former Saints prop Lama Tasi was sin-binned for three consecutive late shots, they ran in three late tries.

McCarthy-Scarsbrook bundled over after an initial break from Lomax, who got in on the act himself before Thompson completed the scoring with an easy finish.

Salford, who claimed their first win, a 36-12 victory at home to Hull KR last Friday night, have just two points from their first three games.

St Helens head coach Justin Holbrook:

"It was a good win in the end but it was a bit scratchy. It's good to keep them tryless and that's one thing that kept us together.

"You are never going to be brilliant when you have a difficult week, with the game off and on and you're training in snow. But I wanted to play. Yes, we have a five-day turnaround but we'll be fine for Friday (the local derby at Warrington).

"If there's someone who is going to complain about the snow and the weather conditions, it's Benny Barba, as he's from North Queensland.

"But he's been in the thick of it saying to the lads, 'What are you complaining about? Let's get on with it'. He's in a good place at the moment, is playing well and it's good to have him here."

Salford head coach Ian Watson:

"It's three defeats out of four, but I'm not worried. We've had two bad halves of rugby - one against Wigan and one here at St Helens.

"We've fallen short here. It's up to us to step up and make sure we're doing things for 80 minutes.

"Barba's class shone and he was the difference in the first half, as well as our discipline problems.

"I'm confident in the players we have but, to be fair, we got what we deserved. We're giving away cheap penalties and not completing our sets."
