A weakened Warrington ran in six tries at the Halliwell Jones Stadium as they got away with an off night to see off struggling Salford.
Sitaleki Akauola, Tom Lineham and Toby King scored before the break to earn a narrow 14-10 lead as Jack Littlejohn scored twice for the Reds.
After being pegged back to 14-14 by Jake Bibby's try, Wire then eased clear with three unanswered tries.
Josh Charnley, Daryl Clark and Mike Cooper crossed to wrap up victory.
Warrington coach Steve Price rested Stefan Ratchford and Chris Hill, who were both on England duty in the United States last weekend, while Ryan Atkins (bicep) and Harvey Livett (knee) were both out.
But in sweltering conditions it was to their big players that they turned when it was needed, to help leapfrog into third ahead of Castleford's trip to Perpignan to face Catalans on Saturday.
Warrington went back in front at 20-14 when Charnley's spectacular diving finish in the corner took his tally to 17 tries in only 14 league and cup appearances. Bryson Goodwin added the second of his three conversions.
Wire held that slender six-point lead until 10 minutes from time, when Clark dived over from close range and Cooper's last-minute effort further flattered the hosts' winning margin.
Warrington head coach Steve Price told BBC Radio Manchester:
"We weren't at our best, we understand and know that but the boys are coming off a week off.
"We played some reasonable football in some good patches.
"There was six or seven try-scoring opportunities where we could have got over the stripe. I'm just pleased to come away with a win."
Salford head coach Ian Watson told BBC Radio Manchester:
"We started a bit scrappy at first and then we regenerated ourselves and got back into the game.
"Just before half-time, they got a bit of an advantage on us and our transitions just weren't quite right and that probably cost us in the second half.
"Overall, the effort from the boys was outstanding, especially from the amount of changes we had to do."
