Argentina will now play tournament favourites New Zealand in the quarter-finals

Argentina reached the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals at the expense of Pool B rivals Scotland after beating Georgia.

The South Americans scored three tries, Felipe Contepomi finishing with 13 points, to secure second spot behind table toppers England.

Scotland, who lost 16-12 to England on Saturday, needed Georgia to win by eight points or more to progress.

But Georgia could only manage a first-half try from Lasha Khmaladze against the powerful Argentines.

Argentina, who needed just a point to qualify as runners-up, struggled to break through the Georgia defence as the influential Contepomi missed penalties in the 5th and 13th minutes.

But in the 33rd minute Julio Farias freed Juan Jose Imhoff to touch down in the corner and tries by Contepomi and Agustin Gosio followed to secure a last-eight tie against hosts New Zealand.

"We have to rest now and start analysing the All Blacks and try to see their weakest points, if they have any," said Contepomi.

"But hopefully it will be a good game and we can be competitive on the day."
