Gareth Baber and Justin Burnell to continue at Cardiff Blues

Cardiff Blues chairman Peter Thomas has confirmed coaches Gareth Baber and Justin Burnell will be in charge for the rest of the season.

Baber and Burnell were appointed interim coaches, external after Dai Young left the region to join side London Wasps, external in June.

The Blues board met before the region's Heineken Cup win over London Irish, external.

"We're very happy with Justin Burnell and Gareth Baber," Thomas told BBC Wales Sport.

"We shall be giving them 100% support for the rest of the season."

Friday night's win over London Irish maintained the Blues' perfect start in the Heineken Cup following victory over Racing Metro, external the previous weekend.

Prior to the London Irish match Burnell had said he would have been "disappointed" had they not been asked to continue in their roles.

"We couldn't have done any more," said forwards coach Burnell.

"We've won some crucial games, worked hard out in Racing Metro so it's not going to be from a lack of trying for me and Gareth.

"The last fortnight has gone so quickly with the preparations, the World Cup players coming back, getting that prepared for Racing Metro, the pressures of Racing Metro.

"Now this week I haven't had time to even think or listen to who the latest candidate is."

Blues backer Thomas had praised Burnell and Baber in the wake of the win at Racing Metro, describing them as "a great combination".

New Zealand's World Cup-winning coach Graham Henry and Wales assistant Shaun Edwards had previously been linked with the possibility of filling the role Young once occupied.

Blues chairman Thomas admitted he wanted Edwards, external as their part-time defence coach.

However, Edwards ruled out a role with the Blues after signing a four-year contract to remain as Wales defence coach, external.

Instead Edwards hopes to work one day a week at an English Premiership club.
