Glasgow Warriors have signed Samoa international wing David Lemi until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old has been brought in following an injury to fellow back DTH van der Merwe.

Lemi said: "I'm delighted to have signed for Glasgow Warriors and to have the chance to help the team enjoy a successful season."

Head coach Sean Lineen added: "He's hungry, he handles pressure well and he's a proven try scorer."

Lemi has been playing in England since 2005, latterly with London Wasps, external, and is classed as a UK resident, meaning he will not be considered as a 'non-European' for Glasgow's RaboDirect Pro 12 matches.

A maximum of two non-European players are allowed in RaboDirect Pro 12 matchday squads.

"One look at the squad list tells you this is a club with a lot of talented players, and I'm confident I can bring the benefit of my own experience to bear and play a part in the side continuing to win," said Lemi.

"Having spoken to Sean Lineen, I've already got insight into the passion and commitment that I'll find at the club. They've been doing well of late, and I can't wait to do my bit to make sure that run continues."

Van der Merwe requires surgery to correct a shoulder problem and Lineen is pleased to have strengthened his back division.

"It looks like we're going to be without one of our main try-providers, DTH, for a significant amount of time, so it's fantastic to have brought on board someone like David who we know will provide the same sort of threat," said the head coach.

Meanwhile, Warriors wing Dave McCall has been sent on a month's loan to RFU Championship side Rotherham Titans and forward Rory Pitman has returned to Ospreys following a loan spell.

"David's had a tough time so far this year with injury," added Lineen. "This is a great chance for him to get some games under his belt and take it from there.

"I'd also like to thank Rory for the hard work he put in during his time here. He started in our win over Leinster and pushed our other back-rowers hard."
