Edinburgh sign fly-half Piers Francis from Chiefs

Piers Francis has joined Edinburgh from New Zealand side Chiefs, with the 22-year-old signing a two-year deal.

English-born Francis moved to New Zealand in 2009 after three years in Saracens' development academy.

He joined Chiefs from Auckland last year and is expected to join his new team-mates in Scotland this week.

"Coming from the UK, I was very excited by an approach from Edinburgh Rugby and it moved very quickly from there," said Francis.

"It's a new challenge in two great competitions, where I can test myself and integrate some of the southern hemisphere ways in my game into a club that's packed with internationals.

"I believe I have the skills and the attitude to enjoy success with Edinburgh Rugby and see this as another great opportunity for me to develop my game even further as part of a very professional set-up alongside great players and great coaches."

Edinburgh are third bottom of the Pro12 having won only twice this season. They have also struggled in the Heineken Cup, losing both of their opening pool matches.

"He's a very talented individual who is quick, skilful and has a fantastic eye for breaking the line. He's a very good fit for Edinburgh Rugby."
