Redruth overjoyed at 17-11 win over leaders Henley

Redruth captain Chris Fuca has praised his players after their 17-11 win over National Two leaders Henley at the Rec.

Redruth stay fourth in National Two South, four points off top spot after the win, which was only the second time Henley have lost so far this season.

"I'm really happy with the boys after the couple of week we've had," he told BBC Cornwall.

"We said we'd stick together and two big results like that really shows what we're about."

Redruth's players have had a turbulent time off the field, with their as the club tries to battle a cash flow crisis as it struggles with a £110,000 debt.

But on the field they have won at high-flying Shelford and beat the league leaders to extend their winning run to three matches.

"I don't think too many clubs would stick together like we have and that's a credit or Redruth Rugby Club," Fuca said.

"The weather really played into our hands, we knew we'd be dominant up front and we didn't disappoint."

On a mud bath of a pitch after heavy rain Redruth scored all their points in the first half.

James Comben got a third-minute penalty for Henley before Redruth's dominance in the pack forced a penalty try 10 minutes later.

Paul Thirlby kicked a 20th-minute penalty before Richard Brown went over just before the break.

Comben kicked a penalty midway through the second half before David Manning scored a stoppage-time try to earn Henley a bonus point.

"It's what we expected," said prop Darren Jacques.

"We're in good form at then moment and playing pretty well and it's exactly what we thought we'd get at the end of the day.

"They're a good side, top of the table for a reason, but they met our strength today and I wouldn't want to be down here playing our pack on a wet day.

"We're a match for anyone in the league, especially our pack.

"Our backs can throw the ball around on as dry day and to be fair we're a pretty decent unit this year."
