Launceston skipper frustrated by Worthing defeat

Launceston captain Tom Rawlings was frustrated after his side's 19-7 loss to National Two South leaders Worthing.

Sixth-placed Launceston conceded two tries in the first 16 minutes as Worthing ensured they need just one win from their final two games to clinch the divisional title.

"I'm a bit frustrated that we didn't get a few more points on the board," Rawlings said.

"But you could see why they are where they are in the league."

The game marked the final home appearance of forward Josh Lord, who is leaving Polson Bridge after eight years to take over as player-coach at Truro.

"The guys gave everything for the shirt, and they gave everything for Josh Lord as well in his last home fixture," Rawlings told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"He's had a great eight year career here at Launceston and I think we sent him off in style with a big crowd and gave him a big cheer come the end of the game."

Kieran Leeming and Charlie McGowan's scored early tries for Worthing before Richard Friend went over for the Cornish All Blacks, but the visitors led 12-7 lead at half time.

William Stutchbury's 56th minute touchdown sealed the win for the Sussex club, who are guaranteed a play-off place and look strong favourites for automatic promotion to National One.

"It's not all lost and we want to finish the season on a high now.

"At times we lacked a little bit of variation when we were in that strike zone. Our centres didn't see much ball and I don't think we threw anything different at them, we just seemed to batter their line and snuff our way over," added Rawlings.

"Fair play to Worthing, they halted us every time we attacked, but I do think we gave them a couple of gimmes today.

"But the guys fought to the end, we wanted an 80-minute performance and we got one."
