Jonny Wilkinson has had his day - Jonathan Davies

Former Wales captain Jonathan Davies says taking Jonny Wilkinson on the British and Irish Lions tour would be a "backward step".

Wilkinson, 33, was offered a place on the tour of Australia by coach Warren Gatland but the veteran fly-half wanted to concentrate on playing for Toulon.

"I don't think his game management is that great," Davies said. "He also does not bring centres into the game.

"He has had his day but it's surprising there are only two fly-halves."

Retired England international Wilkinson, who won 91 caps for his country and has six for the Lions, kicked Toulon to victory over Saracens last month to secure his side a place in this season's Heineken Cup final.

His form for the French side raised the prospect of his being selected for the Lions and, although he ruled himself out of squad selection, he could still be offered a call-up as an injury replacement.

But Davies, who is surprised Gatland has only picked Ireland's Jonny Sexton and England's Owen Farrell as specialist fly-halves, told the Scrum V programme he was not convinced Wilkinson's games would be suited to the tour down under.

"To go to Australia we have to play more than just kicking goals and taking the three points," he said.

"They will come and they will score tries against us. I think we'll have to score tries against them and I don't think that Jonny Wilkinson is that man."
