Plymouth Albion sign Gareth Evans and Dan Mugford

Plymouth Albion have boosted their squad for next season with the signing of London Welsh hooker Gareth Evans and London Scottish fly-half Dan Mugford.

Evans, 31, re-joins Albion a season after leaving for the Kassam Stadium, having previously spent six seasons at the Brickfields.

Injuries meant he did not feature in the Premiership, playing twice in the LV=Cup and twice in the Amlin Cup.

Mugford, who is 21, played three times in the Championship last season.

The England Counties international spent most of the year on loan at National One side Rosslyn Park, but is originally from Devon and has impressed boss James Shanahan.

"Dan came to Cambridge just after I left and I have kept a close eye on his progress," Shanahan said.

"He had a good first season at London Scottish and scored a lot of points.

"Dan is a very talented fly-half and he is a natural ball player. He is a similar type of player to me and I'm hoping to pass my fly half knowledge onto him."

Meanwhile Evans, who is a serving Royal Marine, has been part of the Royal Navy sides that have played the Army at Twickenham over the past few seasons.

"Gareth Evans is a good signing for Plymouth Albion," Shanahan said.

"His season at London Welsh was interrupted by injury, but he was outstanding when he played for the Navy against the Army at Twickenham.

"Coming out of a Premiership club, Gareth will bring good experience to Brickfields. It is always good to see an Albion old boy coming back to the club."
