Jersey have been docked two points and fined £5,000 over the circumstances surrounding Ben Maidment's suspension in pre-season.
Maidment was sent off against Coventry and it was thought he would serve his ban the following week against French side Le Rheu.
The Rugby Football Union said that game never happened and it was not informed.
Jersey pleaded guilty to not acting towards the RFU with the utmost good faith.
A disciplinary panel hearing in Gatwick on Friday night handed out the fine and deduction but dropped the charges against Maidment himself.
The number eight played in Jersey's Championship opener against Plymouth Albion which ended in a 41-27 defeat for the islanders.
"We're disappointed to have lost points after a making a solid start to our league campaign this season," said Jersey chairman Bill Dempsey.
"However we feel we had a constructive and fair hearing and will now look to move forward.
"We have been investigating the circumstances of this case as we prepared for the RFU hearing, and this investigation will continue.
"We recognise that the case has highlighted some shortcomings in the club's internal controls and will be taking measures to remedy this situation."
Jersey have won two of their opening four league matches but now find themselves back on six points.
