Newcastle Falcons will have a 3G artificial playing surface in place at Kingston Park for the 2014-15 season.

Falcons are the second Premiership club to opt for a non-grass pitch, with Saracens having one at Allianz Park.

Director of rugby Dean Richards is confident the new pitch will aid his plans to improve the team's style of rugby after just 23 tries in 2013-14.

"The new surface will undoubtedly produce a more free-flowing entertaining style," he said.

Both the Rugby Football Union and Newcastle City Council have given permission for the development, which it is hoped will have a wider impact.

"There is also the potential for community use of the pitch on and around match days which will benefit the sport in our region," Richards said.
