Edinburgh ran in six tries against Treviso at Murrayfield

Edinburgh still need to improve if they are to win their Pro12 derby against Glasgow Warriors despite a confidence-boosting 48-0 dismantling of Treviso.

So says Edinburgh head coach Alan Solomons, who only gave his side "six or seven out of 10" despite running in six tries against the Italians.

"It was a positive evening, but we've got to make quite sure that we keep our feet on the ground," said Solomons.

"Glasgow are a much classier outfit than this Treviso side."

Edinburgh are in eighth place in the table, 11 points behind fourth-top Glasgow even before their Scottish rivals face leaders Munster on Saturday afternoon.

"Next week, we play a very powerful side - one of the top sides in the Pro12 - so it will be a completely different challenge," Solomons told BBC Scotland.

"Glasgow are a very good side. We've got to perform to the absolute best of our ability to give ourselves any chance.

"They are right at the top of the log of Pro12. I know they have had narrow defeats, but I think they've done very well in Europe.

"I think we are making progress, but everyone understands that we've got a massive mountain to climb and obviously we'll have to lift our performance to compete."

Solomons still believes his side is under-strength but hopes to have some of his best players back from injury for next Saturday's match at Scotstoun.

"It is progress and I think the important thing for me is to show that, without seven of our front liners, we've put out a competitive side," he said.

"It really speaks volumes for the squad we're putting together and we're getting much better strength in depth."

Edinburgh hope Matt Scott will be fit to return to the side against Glasgow

Solomons said fly-half Matt Scott had not been risked against Treviso but should be fit to face Glasgow, as should centre Phil Burleigh.

The coach expected lock Anton Bresler to recover from the knee infection that forced him to sit out the match against Treviso.

Meanwhile, flanker Hamish Watson is expected to return to training and Scotland hooker Ross Ford will be assessed for a persistent back injury.

The win over Treviso was marred by a mass brawl that burst through the advertising hoardings at Murrayfield, with visiting forward Romelu Acosta being red-carded and scrum-half Grayson Hart being shown a yellow.

"It is not an incident one wants to see at a rugby game to be perfectly honest and it is good that it eventually calmed down," added Solomons.

"I think in the beginning, Grayson Hart just tried to push people away and obviously there was provocation.

"From the little bit I saw from the television, it looked for the most part that we certainly kept our cool, which was important."
