Ross Johnston has not played since October

Bristol have confirmed long-serving hooker Ross Johnston is retiring from professional rugby at the age of 28.

The front-rower has not played for the Championship leaders since October because of injury.

Johnston made his debut for the club in 2009 and and made 119 first-team appearances, scoring 27 tries, which is a club record for a forward.

"I've had a fantastic six years with Bristol and have some great memories of my time with the club," he said.

"I'm sad to be leaving but everybody involved in the club have been brilliant with me."

Director of rugby Andy Robinson added: "We're disappointed to lose Ross because he's been an important individual for this club for many seasons.

"Ross is a huge character - one of the most popular players in the squad and real warrior on the pitch - we thank him for his loyal services."

Johnston is the second Bristol player to retire from playing this month, following the departure of Scotland flanker Ross Rennie.
