Northampton Saints have signed Sale lock Michael Paterson for next season.

The 29-year-old New Zealand-born forward was in the England squad to tour his native country last summer, but has yet to earn a Test cap.

Paterson would have been in contention for a Six Nations place had he not been ruled out by knee surgery.

"I'm looking forward to the challenges that lie ahead and continuing the development of my rugby in such a highly competitive team," he said., external

"I have very much enjoyed my time with Sale and will leave knowing I gave my all every time I pulled on the jersey.

"In the meantime, my priorities still remain with Sale, getting back on the pitch and playing my part in the lead up to the play-offs."

Paterson arrived in Britain in 2010, signing for Cardiff Blues, before switching to Sale three years later.

He has made 29 Premiership appearances for the Sharks, but has not featured since November because of his knee injury.

"Michael has proven himself to be a quality player wherever he has been," said Saints director of rugby Jim Mallinder.

"He has earned recognition from national selectors, supporters and players alike for the consistently high levels of performance and commitment."
