Premiership: Wasps 32-21 Gloucester

Wasps secured a bonus-point victory over Gloucester to move into the Premiership play-off places.

The Cherry and Whites made a good start thanks to Ross Moriarty's try and the first of three James Hook penalties.

But the hosts turned it around before the break, with Thomas Young, Rob Miller and Elliot Daly all going over to give their side a 17-13 advantage.

Young crossed again and although Henry Purdy gave Gloucester hope, Guy Thompson's try made sure of Wasps' win.

David Humphreys' side remain eighth in the standings and will be frustrated to come away with nothing after such a positive start at a noisy Ricoh Arena.

Welsh fly-half Hook opened the scoring with a penalty and his side were soon 10-0 up after he converted Moriarty's touchdown on the left - set up by some neat play from Mark Atkinson.

But the hosts hit back and Young combined pace and power to cross under the posts, with Andy Goode duly converting, before Hook's second kick from the tee.

Gloucester were then put on the back foot by two quick Wasps tries before half-time - Miller went over following Tom Varndell's break and Daly added their third after being set up by Christian Wade, although fly-half Goode failed to convert either.

Dai Young's side came out in the same vein after the break, his son Thomas adding his second of the game and exposing Gloucester's defensive frailties.

The Cherry and Whites pulled back to within eight points thanks to another Hook kick and were a man up after James Downey's yellow card for a deliberate knock-on.

Atkinson thought he had crossed for a vital try for the visitors, only for the television match official to chalk it off for crossing, before Purdy eventually went over from Bill Meakes' offload.

But once again Wasps rose to the occasion and a Goode penalty and a Thompson try, set up by Sailosi Tagicakibau, made sure they kept their 100% league record intact at their new Coventry home.

Wasps director of rugby Dai Young:

"Something we have talked about is to keep our home record in the Premiership intact, which is hugely important for us.

"But it was a pretty scrappy performance from us. We were very ordinary in parts but to come away with a win, let alone a bonus-point win, I am really pleased.

"Yet we have to be honest with ourselves and, while we showed glimpses of some good stuff, we were sloppy and put a lot of pressure on ourselves as well. We know we have to be better than that."

Gloucester director of rugby David Humphreys:

"We lacked composure and, when opportunities come, Wasps are probably one of the best in the league at finishing off small chances. We've not got that killer edge yet. That is something we want to work on.

"It has been a difficult week for Jonny May but, credit to him, he has come into our group and brought huge enthusiasm to the training group.

"He was looking forward to playing and he nearly set us up for a typical Gloucester try from nothing."
