Scotland fly-half Finn Russell will miss Saturday's Six Nations match against Italy after an appeal against his two-week ban was unsuccessful.

The Glasgow Warriors stand-off was initially shown a yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Dan Biggar during Wales' 26-23 victory at Murrayfield.

But the 22-year-old was suspended after the caution was retrospectively upgraded to a red card.

The Scottish Rugby Union's appeal was dismissed after a hearing on Wednesday.

Russell, capped seven times, will be available for Scotland's final two Six Nations matches - against England at Twickenham on 14 March, and at home to Ireland a week later.

Vern Cotter's men go in to Saturday's home game against Italy fifth in the table, above only their opponents.
