Full-back Mike Brown and lock Courtney Lawes will return to England's starting line-up for Saturday's Six Nations match against Scotland.

Lawes and Brown replace Saracens duo George Kruis and Alex Goode, as the two changes to the team beaten by Ireland.

Forwards Kieran Brookes, Geoff Parling and Tom Wood also return to the match-day squad.

"We have had to make some tough selection calls," England head coach Stuart Lancaster said.

"It's been an intense two weeks of training as everyone wants to be on that field on Saturday."

Northampton's Lawes, who missed England's first three games of the Six Nations campaign with an ankle injury, will start alongside Bath's Dave Attwood in the second row.

Harlequins full-back Brown returns after missing the 19-9 defeat to Ireland in Dublin on 1 March with the concussion he suffered during the 47-17 win against Italy at Twickenham on 14 February.

Leicester's Parling could make his first appearance in an England Six Nations match for two years, after a series of injury troubles that included operations on both shoulders, a hamstring problem, concussion and knee ligament damage.

"There's always a lot of competition for places - and having experienced players such as Courtney, Tom and Geoff available after playing well for their clubs in the last few weeks adds to our options," Lancaster said.

England: M Brown (Harlequins); A Watson (Bath), J Joseph (Bath), L Burrell (Northampton), J Nowell (Exeter); G Ford (Bath), B Youngs (Leicester); J Marler (Harlequins), D Hartley (Northampton), D Cole (Leicester), D Attwood (Bath), C Lawes (Northampton), J Haskell (Wasps), C Robshaw (Harlequins, capt), B Vunipola (Saracens).

England head coach Stuart Lancaster says he had to step in to cool the intensity of training on Wednesday

"You could describe it a backlash if you want to, but I could tell by the intensity of the training today, 30 players in 15 v 15 - I had to calm it down, to be honest.

"You haven't just got the 15 players who have been positioned to start, you have the 15 players who want to be in the starting line-up and the intensity that goes with that. It was me blowing the whistle at the end just to make sure we didn't play the game too early."

Lancaster on Saturday's Wales v Ireland match

Six Nations leaders - and Grand Slam hopefuls - Ireland visit Wales in Cardiff earlier on Saturday, in a match that will affect England's chances of closing a two-point deficit on Joe Schmidt's side.

Lancaster said: "I will turn off all the TVs off in the dressing room. It is not something you can control as a player. their game will be playing out at around 4.30pm, just as we are going out to warm up in front of 82,000 people and play against Scotland.

"You don't want their heads full of a game that is going on, in an environment they cannot control. And that's the same for me, if I'm being honest."

Lancaster on Mike Brown's injury

"It was bad injury and a bad knock to his head. We needed to do right by him, so it was definitely the right decision not to involve him in the Ireland game.

"He is champing at the bit in training, he trained really well on Friday, we have had two good days and he was exceptional in training today. He will be ready come Saturday."
