Premiership: Saracens 42-14 Harlequins

Chris Ashton has now scored six tries in his last five matches against Harlequins

Saracens moved back up to second in the Premiership table with victory over Harlequins in front of a record crowd for club rugby union at Wembley.

Jack Clifford's score after only 26 seconds had put Quins ahead, but tries from Chris Wyles and Chris Ashton gave Sarries a 21-8 half-time advantage.

Ashton's second try after the break confirmed Saracens' superiority.

And Wyles and Billy Vunipola crossed late on to seal the bonus point in front of 84,068 spectators.

That number surpassed the previous record attendance of 83,889, set in the corresponding fixture last year.

England quintet Chris Robshaw, Joe Marler, Nick Easter, Billy and Mako Vunipola were all on show having featured in the Six Nations last weekend, although Quins were without Mike Brown after the 29-year-old suffered concussion symptoms following the 55-35 victory over France.

Conor O'Shea's side did not appear to be missing their star full-back when Clifford put them ahead almost straight from the start, charging down scrum-half Neil de Kock's box kick and touching down.

But Harlequins, languishing down in eighth and already seemingly out of the play-off picture, were soon pegged back when Marcelo Bosch's mini-break allowed Wyles to finish underneath the posts.

Having converted, Charlie Hodgson then added a penalty and wing Ashton turned the game on its head by latching on to his own grubber kick to cross the whitewash and put Saracens in charge.

A couple of Alex Goode penalties, either side of Nick Evans' reply, stretched Sarries' lead to 13 points and last season's Premiership runners-up looked in command at the interval.

Ashton boosted his hopes of making Stuart Lancaster's World Cup squad by capping a brilliantly worked line-out and team move to score his second try, although two more Evans penalties just about kept Harlequins in the contest.

But, after 27-year-old Ashton was sin-binned for a dangerous tackle, Saracens secured the bonus point with six minutes left when Wyles latched onto a kick through to grab his second of the match.

And Billy Vunipola rounded off the scoring with the last play of the contest, bundling his way over behind a rolling maul to send Mark McCall's team above Exeter in the table.

"We've scored three tries eight times in the Premiership this season so it would have been unbelievably depressing to do that again.

"We hope those lost bonus points along the way don't come back to haunt us, but it was very important for us to get that fifth point today.

Harlequins director of rugby Conor O'Shea:

"We're just too easy to knock off our stride at the moment.

"We went into the Six Nations window just two points off the top four having been knocked out of Europe the way we were.

"It's incredibly disappointing. We will come out the other side. It's been a really difficult couple of months."
