Matt Scott has made just 10 appearances for Edinburgh this season

Edinburgh and Scotland centre Matt Scott has been ruled out for the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a shoulder injury.

His club says it is too early to know how it might affect his availability for the Rugby World Cup in September.

Scott, 24, has had injuries to both shoulders in the past year and missed the start of the season after surgery.

The latest injury to his left shoulder occurred in Scotland's Six Nations defeat by Ireland on 21 March.

Scott, who has played 14 times for club and country this season, was operated on last week.

"It had been hoped that Matt would be able to manage his injury conservatively," Edinburgh said in a statement.

"But, following consultation with specialists, the decision to perform an investigative arthroscopy was taken.

"This resulted in him requiring a further surgical procedure to help deal with his shoulder complaints.

"Matt will now continue with his rehabilitation programme with the Edinburgh Rugby medical team and will be unavailable to play for Edinburgh for the rest of the season."

In March 2014, Scott, who has 24 Scotland caps, signed a contract extension with Edinburgh until summer 2016.
