Wasps will play in the European Champions Cup next season after a thrilling final-day draw at London Irish earned them a top-six finish.

Utility back James Short scored a late try for the hosts to deny Wasps their second away win of the season.

Guy Thompson, Rob Miller and James Haskell all crossed for Wasps, while Sailosi Tagicakibau added two tries.

Andrew Fenby, Alex Lewington, Chris Noakes and Short scored the London Irish tries in a compelling encounter.

Dai Young's side went into the match needing just two points to be absolutely sure of finishing in the top six, though Sale's defeat at Exeter meant that Wasps secured their place in Europe's top-tier competition with room to spare.

The visitors had England lock Joe Launchbury back in their starting line-up for the first time in six months following a serious neck injury, but often found themselves trailing in a topsy-turvy final-day contest.

Wasps had looked to have won the game when captain Haskell crossed five minutes before the end, but that was before Short's dramatic late intervention.

Shane Geraghty and Wasps' Andy Goode both kicked 15 points each, as neither side could be separated at the final whistle.

The draw meant London Irish finished 10th, with new head coach Tom Coventry due to arrive at the Madejski Stadium following the conclusion of this year's World Cup.
