World Sevens Series: Paris selection is blow to Glasgow

World Rugby has confirmed that Paris will be a venue on its lucrative World Sevens Series from next year, with Glasgow expected to lose out.

Scottish Rugby had already expressed its disappointment at the prospect of losing such a cash generator.

But the SRU board on Thursday agreed to continue to field a team in next season's Sevens Series.

A World Rugby spokesman was unable to confirm which venues would be dropped from the 2015-16 schedule.

The French capital will join Vancouver, Sydney, Cape Town and Singapore as a new host city on the 10-destination series.

"We will be announcing the full 2015-16 schedule within the next month," the spokesman said.

World Rugby has always allocated two venues to Europe in its circuit.

Hosts for this season were Gold Coast in Australia, Dubai, Port Elizabeth in South Africa, Wellington in New Zealand, Las Vegas in United States, Hong Kong, Tokyo in Japan and Glasgow, with the final being at London's Twickenham Stadium this weekend.

The SRU has been lobbying hard in the hope of retaining host status, pointing out that Scotland invented the format.

Following last week's penultimate leg of this season's series at Glasgow's Scotstoun Stadium, teams from South Africa, Fiji and New Zealand secured qualification for next term.

The final qualification spot will be secured after this weekend's finale in London.

Paris' last appearance on the series was in 2006 and World Rugby says the choice of the 20,000-capacity Stade Jean-Bouin followed a "highly competitive tender process".
