Wasps' European Champions Cup pool is a 'humdinger'

Wasps relocated their matchday base to the Ricoh Arena in Coventry in December

Wasps' European Champions Cup pool has been described as a "humdinger" by the club's chief executive Nick Eastwood.

Wasps have been drawn against holders Toulon, and former champions Leinster and Bath in the competition which starts in November.

"There are no easy pools, some are more difficult than others, but boy, have we got a humdinger," Eastwood told BBC Coventry & Warwickshire.

"We want to test ourselves against the best and we've certainly got that."

The tournament was introduced as a successor to the Heineken Cup last season, with Toulon winning the trophy by beating Clermont Auvergne in the final at Twickenham.

And, with three-time Heineken Cup winners Leinster and 1998 champions Bath also in the mix, Eastwood knows Wasps fans are in for an exciting time in Europe.

"You've got a world XV from Toulon, Leinster comprise most of the Irish side and Bath have got a lot of young stars so it's a fantastic spectacle," he said.

Wasps qualified for the European Champions Cup after finishing sixth in the Premiership last season - their first campaign at their new matchday home at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.

"We were thrilled with the way the first season went and incredibly grateful to all the people in the Coventry and Warwickshire area that came to support us," he said.

"We have to build game on game and it shows what a huge rugby area the West Midlands is."
