Scotland prop Ryan Grant has avoided a broken ankle after he left Dublin on crutches following Saturday's 28-22 defeat by Ireland.

There were concerns that Grant, 29, would miss the World Cup, but an X-ray has found no fracture.

However, it will not be known how long he will be sidelined for until he has a detailed scan later this week.

Fellow prop Jon Welsh will also miss Saturday's trip to Italy after it was confirmed he suffered concussion.

Glasgow Warriors' Kevin Bryce has been called up to the squad as fellow hooker Fraser Brown is being treated for a mild hamstring problem.

Meanwhile, flanker Hugh Blake has returned to training despite dislocating a finger in Ireland.
