Aaron Penberthy: Jersey in talks to extend fly-half's contract

Jersey boss Harvey Biljon is still in discussions about extending the contract of fly-half Aaron Penberthy.

The 23-year-old former Cornish Pirates player is a free agent in the summer.

"Aaron wants to play more rugby, he's not played a huge amount of rugby this season," Biljon told BBC Radio Jersey.

"He does want to stay, but Aaron's got to look to where he is in his career and collectively both Aaron and myself need to come to a decision on what's best for Aaron," Biljon added.

Penberthy has made just six starts in the Championship this season, having been much more of a first choice in his first two years at the club.

"We've known each other for a long time, since the Cornish Pirates days, and we've had a pretty honest conversation about what Aaron needs to do," added Biljon.

"Whatever decision is made, we'll both respect the decision, and we'll know it's one that's going to be right for him."

Jersey have 15 players leaving at the end of the current campaign, including Argentina international Ignacio Lancuba, who is returning to his homeland for family reasons, and Sam Lockwood, who has agreed a deal with Premiership club Newcastle.

Meanwhile Jersey forward James Freeman has been named Championship Player of the Month for March.

The flanker was nominated after he scored two tries in Jersey's impressive 44-27 win over Rotherham at St Peter and got 44% of the votes.

"It's a massive honour to be named on the shortlist, let alone to win," said Freeman.

"It shows the way Jersey have come on during the season - we've picked up a few wins recently and worked our way up the table and that's helped me to get recognised.

"I've scooped up a few tries along the way, but it comes down to the efforts of the whole squad."
