Sam Davies: Mixed emotions for Ospreys fly-half after Wales debut

Sam Davies and Dan Biggar are in competition for the fly-half spot for both Ospreys and Wales

Wales fly-half Sam Davies said he had mixed feelings after winning his first cap in the 32-8 defeat by Australia.

The 23-year-old came off the bench to replace Ospreys team-mate Dan Biggar in the second half at the Principality Stadium.

Australia's win was their 12 successive victory over Wales.

"Picking my first cap up is a great moment and I'm over the moon with that, but it's not the result we wanted," Davies told BBC Radio Wales Sport.

"Come Monday it's going to be a tough video session where we'll have to look back on the game and really nitpick what went wrong."

Davies who has been a regular at number 10 for Ospreys this season admits the level of intensity was higher to what he has been used to at regional level.

"It was a step-up. It's always hard coming off the bench as you seem to be blowing a bit more," Davies said.

"The bar was risen and it's just about adapting to that now for me and making sure I can keep up with that intensity."

Wales struggled in the first half with just 20 per cent of possession and trailed 20-3 at the break, but Davies says they will have to start much better in their remaining autumn Tests.

"At the end of the day we'll have to start better. We've just got to focus on Argentina and make sure we come out of the blocks a bit quicker," Davies added.

"We'll have to raise the intensity from the start. We went out there and Australia had the ball for the first 20 minutes,"

"At international rugby that'll put you in a hole and, against Argentina, we'll have to come out firing and probably get the first points on the board to get some momentum back."

With autumn Tests to come against Argentina, Japan and South Africa, Davies is hopeful of adding to his first cap and would relish his first start.

"That would be nice, but it's obviously not my decision so I just have to put my head down, train hard and if I do get an opportunity I'll have to make the most of it."
