Tyler Morgan: Dragons hopeful centre will make quick return

Tyler Morgan has a National Dual Contract with the Dragons and Wales

Newport Gwent Dragons hope centre Tyler Morgan will be fit within a couple of weeks after being released by Wales.

The 21-year-old Morgan was prevented from challenging for a place in the autumn series by his hamstring injury.

"Tyler came back to us last week and he was running okay so hopefully he'll be back within a couple of weeks as well," said Dragons backs coach Shaun Connor.

"Tyler's been unfortunate to have injuries whenever he's gone into Wales camp. Hopefully his luck will change."

But Dragons' wing Hallam Amos requires surgery on a shoulder injury suffered in Wales' 32-8 defeat by Australia.

Ospreys 18-year-old Keelan Giles was called up to replace Amos, but Connor hopes 21-year-old Dragons wing Ashton Hewitt will be in Wales contention in future after scoring two tries against Connacht in his first start of the season.

"I know from speaking to Kingsley [Jones, Dragons head coach] and Rob [Howley, Wales coach] that Wales were interested in him at the end of last season, before he got injured," Connor said.

"With Hallam's injury and the way he's been training and playing, I'm sure he's going to get an extended run in the team and that will only help push his claims," explained Connor.

The Anglo-Welsh Cup game at Leicester on Saturday could see a debut for 19-year-old academy fly-half Arwel Robson, with Angus O'Brien set to miss the trip after a head knock in the Pro12 win over Connacht.

The region's other senior fly-halves are already out, with Nick Macleod suffering ankle damage and Dorian Jones dealing with a hernia problem.
